The first week of December on Bainbridge Island always feels like the moment the season truly settles in. Not in a dramatic, snow-globe sort of way, but in the subtle shifts—the early dusk, the glow from shop windows, the familiar hum of people leaning into winter rather than rushing through it. This is when the island begins to trade its rain jackets for wool hats, its quiet weekdays for gatherings that remind us how much life here revolves around community. December on Bainbridge isn’t about spectacle; it’s about small rituals, shared spaces, and the comfort that comes from seeing familiar faces doing familiar things.

This year, that spirit shows up beautifully in three events that each offer their own doorway into the season’s warmth. Together, they sketch a picture of what early December looks like here: creative, welcoming, and full of the soft, good-natured energy that makes people linger a little longer than they planned. Whether you’re someone who approaches the holidays with meticulous lists or someone who tends to wing it until the last minute, there’s something grounding about having local traditions to slip into.

At Eleven Winery, the Holiday Gift & Book Fair adds a literary twist to seasonal shopping. It’s an evening built around stories—those told in books and those shared in conversations between neighbors holding glasses of red. You can feel the island’s creative heartbeat in the mix of authors, makers, and small businesses coming together under the winery’s warm lights. It’s the kind of gathering where you can browse at your own pace, find gifts with actual personality, and enjoy being surrounded by people who appreciate hand-made things and heartfelt writing as much as you do.

A few miles away, BIMA’s Mingle & Market offers a different kind of coziness—part art museum, part holiday gathering, part inside joke for those brave enough to wear their “coziest” or most questionable sweater. The galleries stay open, the cider is warm, and the pace is slow in a way that feels almost old-fashioned. It’s a moment to step out of the rush and remember that shopping can still be calm and even enjoyable when surrounded by art, conversation, and a museum store thoughtfully curated with local creativity in mind.

And then there’s the Bainbridge History Museum’s Holiday Open House, which captures the family-friendly side of December. Santa stops by with good cheer and patience, pets get their moment in the spotlight, and the museum opens its doors wide for a come-as-you-are Saturday. It’s festive without being frantic, nostalgic without being overly polished. It feels like the holidays many of us grew up with—simple, welcoming, and rooted in a place that values connection as much as celebration.

Individually, these events offer lovely ways to mark the season. But taken together, they say something larger about Bainbridge: that even in the busiest, brightest time of year, the island’s charm comes from its people showing up for one another—sharing space, sharing stories, and keeping the season grounded in community.

Holiday Gift & Book Fair

If you’re the kind of person who loves the idea of being “that organized holiday shopper” but usually ends up panic-wrapping something at midnight, the Holiday Gift & Book Fair at Eleven Winery feels like a gentle seasonal intervention. It’s a chance to slow down, sip something delicious, and choose gifts that don’t just check a box—they tell a story.

This year’s fair brings together a thoughtful blend of Pacific Northwest makers, independent booksellers, and four authors whose work spans swoony romance, cozy mystery, and heartfelt family storytelling. Whether you arrive with a list or simply a sense of curiosity, the atmosphere makes browsing feel less like shopping and more like participating in a small, joyful ritual.

The author lineup alone is enough to justify the outing. Julie Farley brings her trademark warmth, humor, and big-family energy to every book she writes. Jen Pitts adds the intrigue of her French Quarter Mystery series—stories that make perfect gifts for readers who love their holidays with a hint of suspense. Serena Bell, a perennial romance favorite, offers emotional, beautifully crafted love stories, while Eve Kasey brings the heat and heart with character-driven romances that linger long after the last page.

Then there are the local makers—the kind of creators you stumble on once and never forget. Jen Colburn Design returns with PNW-inspired art, home goods, and cheerful stationery that strike the rare balance of being both giftable and genuinely delightful. Away With Words Bookshop sets up a pop-up full of literary treats and artisan finds, complete with a build-your-own tote station that feels like adult crafting in the best possible way. And Jasper & Elm Jewelry offers gold-filled and gemstone pieces that are meaningful without being fussy—many supporting nonprofit causes, so your gift carries a little extra purpose.

Layer in the ambience of Eleven Winery—glasses clinking, conversation humming, and the unmistakable feeling of a community easing into the season together—and suddenly holiday shopping feels almost…easy. Maybe even magical.

Come for the wine, stay for the stories, and leave feeling just a bit smug about how far ahead of the holidays you suddenly are.

Mingle & Market

There’s something undeniably charming about holiday shopping inside a museum—the warm lights, the hush of the galleries, the sense that inspiration is quietly tucked into every corner. BIMA’s Mingle & Market leans into that atmosphere and gives members a cozy, after-hours chance to enjoy it at a slower pace.

For two hours, the museum store becomes a kind of creative hideaway. Everything in the shop is 20% off, which is generous enough to make browsing feel guilt-free, but the real draw is the experience: handmade pieces, art-forward gifts, and the chance to explore new work from a special jewelry vendor pop-up before anyone else gets a peek. It’s the kind of event where you can take your time—pick something up, linger over it, imagine the right person to receive it—and actually enjoy the act of choosing.

Food and drink keep things comfortable, but not fussy. Warm apple cider (the universal sign that winter is officially happening) pairs with small bites, making it easy to wander between the Orientation, Sherry Grover, Feferman, and Beacon galleries without feeling like you need to rush. The galleries stay open for visiting, which means shoppers can slip in and out of browsing mode and art-appreciation mode as the evening unfolds.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a Bainbridge winter gathering without at least a hint of playful eccentricity. Guests are encouraged—enthusiastically—to show up in their coziest attire or embrace the full spirit of the season with an ugly sweater. The contest promises two winners, which feels very BIMA: celebratory, lighthearted, and really just an excuse to enjoy the collective silliness of the holidays.

Gift wrapping is included, which is one of those small conveniences that becomes surprisingly meaningful in December. By the time you leave, you’ve likely checked a few names off your list, enjoyed a relaxed lap around the museum, and shared a warm conversation or two with familiar faces.

If the season tends to sneak up on you, Mingle & Market offers a gentler entry—an evening of thoughtful shopping, artful surroundings, and community, wrapped in the kind of cozy energy that makes winter on Bainbridge feel inviting.

Holiday Open House

The Bainbridge History Museum’s Holiday Open House isn’t just another seasonal stop—it’s the kind of community gathering that blends cheer with a sense of place, grounding the festivities in the island’s character and history. It’s an all-day affair, relaxed in pace but rich in small, meaningful moments.

Doors open at 10 AM, and the museum fills with the kind of warmth that has nothing to do with temperature: families stopping by between errands, kids buzzing with anticipation, and adults taking a moment to soak in an atmosphere that feels both festive and familiar. The centerpiece of the day, of course, is Santa—a classic, jolly presence with roots stretching back to the 4th century, though on this particular Saturday he’s decidedly modern: patient, approachable, and ready for photos.

Visitors can reserve a spot ahead of time for meet-and-greets, but the museum keeps things flexible. Even if reservations fill up, walk-ins are still welcome, maintaining that open-door spirit that’s typical of Bainbridge gatherings. Throughout the earlier part of the day, Santa meets families one by one, offering a chance to capture that annual photo—equal parts excitement, nostalgia, and sometimes a little chaos, depending on the age group.

A special touch comes in the late afternoon. From 3 to 4 PM, pets get their moment with Santa, too. Dogs in holiday sweaters, cats carried in soft-sided carriers, and the occasional unexpected animal make for some of the most endearing and unpredictable photos of the season. It’s joyful, a little silly, and irresistible to watch unfold.

Between photo sessions, guests can explore the museum’s exhibits—stories of the island’s past that offer a grounding counterbalance to the day’s holiday sparkle. It’s a reminder that Bainbridge’s sense of community is built on decades of people gathering, celebrating, and creating traditions just like this one.

Whether you come for a quick picture or stay longer to wander the exhibits, the Holiday Open House offers a full, cheerful Saturday: approachable, welcoming, and shaped by the museum’s gentle pace. It’s a perfect way to mark the early days of December and step into the season with a little more wonder.Cost, tickets and logistics:
