Sona Jobarteh at the WEAVE

Global superstar, master musician, and humanitarian, Sona Jobarteh, is “Africa’s first female Griot kora virtuoso… blending traditional music, blues, and Afropop to impressive effect.” – The Guardian. Reputed for her skill as an instrumentalist, distinctive voice, and her grace on stage, Jobarteh has rapidly risen to international success.

Traditionally, descendants of Griot families inherit the responsibility of keeping stories of their individual tribes and families alive in the oral tradition with the narrative accompanied by a musical instrument. Breaking from a seven-century-old tradition of Griot families in West Africa, Jobarteh is a feminist icon touring the world to spread her powerful and universal messages through her music and her voice.

While her passion is music, her mission and purpose is education as empowerment and curriculum overhaul for the children of Africa. As seen in both 60 minutes and CNN, she is a leader in social change, singlehandedly using her touring fees to set up The Gambia Academy – an institution dedicated to achieving educational reform across Africa.

Her latest album, Badinyaa Kumoo, was released in 2022.
