As summer settles into Bainbridge Island, residents and visitors have no shortage of opportunities to connect with the community through arts, culture, history, and local gatherings. The island's event calendar continues to reflect the diverse interests and talents that make Bainbridge such a vibrant place to live, offering everything from educational workshops and literary discussions to live music performances and historical presentations. Whether you're looking to learn a new skill, enjoy an evening out with friends, or gain a deeper appreciation for the area's rich heritage, there are plenty of ways to get involved this June.

Community events play an important role in bringing people together, creating opportunities to share experiences, support local organizations, and celebrate the unique character of Bainbridge Island. Many of these programs are designed to be accessible to a wide range of participants, welcoming both longtime residents and newcomers alike. They also showcase the dedication of local artists, educators, historians, and business owners who contribute to the island's strong sense of community.

This month's featured events highlight three very different but equally engaging experiences. Poetry enthusiasts and aspiring writers can explore the art of close reading during a community class led by Bainbridge Island Poet Laureate Erin Malone. The session offers participants a chance to examine poetry in a thoughtful and collaborative environment while developing skills that can enrich their own creative writing. Through discussion, reflection, and optional writing prompts, attendees will gain new insights into the power of language and literary expression.

For those seeking a more relaxed social outing, a weekly Wednesday evening gathering combines live music, premium wines, and local food in an inviting outdoor setting. Featuring performances by talented local musicians, wine specials, charcuterie selections, and food truck fare, the event provides a perfect opportunity to unwind while supporting Bainbridge Island's thriving arts and business communities. The casual atmosphere encourages guests to linger, connect with neighbors, and enjoy a summer evening on the island.

History lovers, meanwhile, can take a step back in time during a special History Huddle program focused on Port Madison after the closure of its historic mill. Led by local historian Kevin Tomlinson, the presentation explores an important chapter in Bainbridge Island's development and offers attendees a deeper understanding of how one of the island's most influential communities evolved over time.

Together, these events demonstrate the wide variety of experiences available on Bainbridge Island this month. Whether your interests lie in literature, music, food, local history, or simply spending time with fellow community members, these upcoming gatherings offer meaningful ways to engage with the people, stories, and traditions that continue to shape island life.

Community Class: Reading Poetry to Enrich Your Own

Residents looking to deepen their appreciation of poetry while sharpening their own writing skills will have a unique opportunity this June at a special community class led by Bainbridge Island Poet Laureate Erin Malone.

Community Class: Reading Poetry to Enrich Your Own takes place on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, from 4 to 5 p.m. The informal gathering is designed for anyone interested in poetry, whether they are longtime readers, aspiring writers, or simply curious about exploring literature in a more meaningful way.

Rather than focusing on lectures or academic analysis, the class centers on thoughtful conversation and close reading. Participants will spend time examining poems together, discussing language, imagery, structure, and the ways poets create meaning on the page. By slowing down and engaging deeply with selected works, attendees can develop a stronger understanding of how poetry functions and discover techniques they may apply to their own creative work.

One of the classโ€™s most appealing features is its welcoming approach. No previous writing experience is required, making it accessible to readers and writers of all backgrounds. Participants are encouraged to engage at their own comfort level, whether that means actively contributing to discussions or simply listening and reflecting on the poems being explored.

Malone, who serves as Bainbridge Islandโ€™s Poet Laureate, brings extensive experience as both a poet and educator. Her guidance will help participants develop close-reading skills that can enrich not only their understanding of poetry but also their broader appreciation of language and storytelling.

For those interested in continuing their creative exploration beyond the session, optional take-home writing prompts will be available. These exercises are designed to inspire new ideas and encourage participants to experiment with techniques discussed during the class. While participation in the writing component is entirely voluntary, it offers an excellent opportunity for attendees to put their observations into practice.

Poetry has long provided a way for people to connect with ideas, emotions, and experiences through language. This community class offers a relaxed environment where participants can discover new perspectives, strengthen their reading skills, and find inspiration for their own creative expression.

Whether you are an avid poetry enthusiast or someone looking to try something new, this one-hour session promises an engaging and enriching literary experience right here on Bainbridge Island.

History Huddle - Port Madison After the Mill

History enthusiasts and curious community members alike are invited to take a closer look at one of Bainbridge Islandโ€™s most significant historic communities during History Huddle: Port Madison After the Mill, taking place on Thursday, June 18, 2026, from 5 to 6:30 p.m.

Please note that the event location has changed and will now be held at BARN, 8890 Three Tree Lane NE, Bainbridge Island.

The program will focus on the fascinating history of Port Madison following the closure of its once-thriving mill. Situated on the islandโ€™s north side, Port Madison has played a central role in shaping Bainbridge Islandโ€™s development and identity. While many residents are familiar with the areaโ€™s historic roots, this presentation will explore the lesser-known chapter that followed the mill era and helped transform the community into the Port Madison residents know today.

Leading the discussion is local historian and longtime Port Madison resident Kevin Tomlinson, whose deep knowledge of the area has made him a respected voice on Bainbridge Island history. Tomlinson will share stories, insights, and historical perspectives that bring this important period to life. Organizers have also announced that a special guest speaker will join the program, with additional details to be revealed soon.

The History Huddle series is designed to make local history accessible and engaging, offering participants an opportunity to connect with the people, events, and places that have shaped the island over generations. Through storytelling and conversation, attendees will gain a better understanding of how economic, social, and cultural changes influenced Port Madison after the mill closed and how those developments continue to affect the community today.

In addition to the presentation, guests can enjoy light snacks and refreshments while meeting fellow history enthusiasts and community members. The informal setting encourages discussion and provides opportunities to ask questions and share personal connections to the islandโ€™s past.

The event is free for members, while non-members are invited to attend with a suggested donation of $5 per person. Because space is limited, advance RSVPs are strongly encouraged.

Whether you are a lifelong Bainbridge Island resident, a newcomer interested in learning more about the community, or simply someone who enjoys local history, this History Huddle offers a chance to step back in time and discover the stories behind one of the islandโ€™s most influential historic neighborhoods.
