The Week Ahead

As autumn settles across Puget Sound, Bainbridge Island turns inward—not in retreat, but in reflection. November brings shorter days, cooler air, and a rhythm that encourages gathering, listening, and sharing. It’s a season when the island’s creative life takes on a deeper hue, as artists, musicians, and storytellers invite the community to slow down and reconnect through art and culture. This week, three events capture that spirit in distinct but complementary ways: a symphonic exploration of myth and imagination, a film festival dedicated to bold voices, and a cultural marketplace that celebrates Latine and Hispanic artistry.
Bainbridge has long balanced small-town intimacy with an outsized artistic identity. The island’s cultural calendar isn’t built around spectacle but around substance—events that value participation over performance, and discovery over familiarity. This week’s offerings underscore that philosophy. Each one, in its own medium, highlights storytelling as a thread that runs through all art. Whether conveyed through a musical motif, a film’s narrative arc, or the texture of a handmade textile, storytelling remains the foundation of connection on Bainbridge Island.
The Bainbridge Symphony Orchestra opens the week with Once Upon A Time, a concert that uses sound to evoke the worlds of fairytales and folklore. At its center is Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite, a work that forever changed the landscape of modern orchestral music. The performance reminds audiences that even in a digital age, an orchestra remains one of the most powerful storytelling instruments—a living ensemble capable of conjuring wonder without a single word.
A few blocks away, the Bainbridge Island Film Festival (BIFF) continues the conversation through cinema. Over three days, multiple venues transform into spaces for dialogue, imagination, and shared experience. The festival brings together filmmakers and filmgoers from across the region to celebrate independent vision and diverse voices. With its focus on inclusivity and creativity, BIFF is less about red carpets and more about community—about the act of seeing the world through someone else’s lens.
And finally, the inaugural BIMA Mercado at the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art offers an entirely different kind of storytelling. Through craft, design, and tradition, Latine and Hispanic artists share cultural narratives that are tactile, visual, and deeply personal. The Mercado coincides with BIMA’s Día de los Muertos and Beyond II exhibition, expanding the celebration beyond remembrance to a living expression of heritage and artistry.
Together, these three events reveal the diversity of Bainbridge Island’s creative landscape. They demonstrate how art, in all its forms, continues to be a mirror and a bridge—reflecting who we are while connecting us to something larger. This week is more than a collection of performances and exhibitions; it’s a reminder of what happens when a community values imagination as much as place.
November may be a quiet month, but on Bainbridge Island, the stories are anything but silent.

Bainbridge Symphony Orchestra Presents: Once Upon A Time
This week, the Bainbridge Symphony Orchestra (BSO) invites audiences to step into a world where music tells the stories words cannot. Their upcoming concert, Once Upon A Time, running November 7–9, centers on the enduring power of storytelling through sound — a theme that connects myth, imagination, and human emotion across generations.
At the heart of the program is Igor Stravinsky’s Suite from The Firebird, one of the most celebrated works in 20th-century orchestral music. Originally composed for Sergei Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes in 1910, The Firebird remains a benchmark of orchestral color and rhythmic innovation. Stravinsky’s score draws on Russian folklore, blending shimmering strings, sharp brass, and intricate percussion to conjure an enchanted world of good and evil. The suite’s movements — from the menacing “Infernal Dance” to the luminous “Finale” — display both the composer’s technical mastery and his gift for emotional storytelling.
For the Bainbridge Symphony Orchestra, this concert represents more than a performance of a well-known classic. It’s an exploration of how narrative can be expressed through purely musical means. The program is designed to appeal to listeners who appreciate traditional orchestral works as well as those who simply enjoy a compelling story. Without sets or dialogue, the orchestra uses sound to evoke the tension of conflict, the magic of transformation, and the satisfaction of resolution.
Under the leadership of Music Director and Conductor Mario Alejandro Torres, the BSO has built a reputation for connecting deeply with its community. Each season features a mix of established repertoire and modern or lesser-known works, offering audiences both familiarity and discovery. Once Upon A Time continues that tradition, using Stravinsky’s masterpiece as an anchor for a concert that celebrates creativity and imagination.
Performances take place at Bainbridge Performing Arts, a venue that has long served as the island’s cultural hub. Attendees can expect an engaging evening that reminds listeners how music can transport us — whether to a faraway kingdom or simply to a place of quiet reflection. Once Upon A Time is less about nostalgia and more about rediscovering wonder through the universal language of sound.

Bainbridge Island Film Festival 2025
This weekend, the Bainbridge Island Film Festival (BIFF) returns for its 2025 edition, bringing four days of screenings, conversations, and community engagement to venues across the island. Hosted in part by the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art (BIMA), which serves as one of the festival’s central screening hubs, BIFF continues its mission to highlight diverse voices and bold storytelling in contemporary cinema.
Running from November 7 through 9, this year’s festival features a packed schedule of films that reflect a wide range of perspectives and genres—from intimate documentaries and independent dramas to experimental shorts and international features. Screenings take place throughout the island, with showtimes spanning from Friday afternoon through Sunday evening. The schedule includes extended hours on opening day (2 p.m.–10 p.m.) and full days of programming on Saturday (11 a.m.–9 p.m.) and Sunday (11 a.m.–7 p.m.), allowing audiences to experience as many films as possible across multiple venues.
More than just a showcase for new films, BIFF has become an annual meeting point for filmmakers, film lovers, and local residents who see cinema as a way to connect ideas and experiences. The festival’s community-oriented approach is evident not only in its programming choices but also in the accessibility of its events. In addition to film screenings, attendees can often participate in Q&A sessions, panel discussions, and informal gatherings that encourage dialogue between artists and audiences. This structure reflects BIFF’s broader goal: to create space for authentic conversation about what stories are being told—and who gets to tell them.
BIMA’s involvement underscores the island’s commitment to nurturing a thriving arts ecosystem. As one of the Pacific Northwest’s most respected small art museums, BIMA lends both visibility and credibility to BIFF’s growing reputation. The collaboration between the museum and festival organizers ensures a strong curatorial perspective and an emphasis on visual storytelling as a shared cultural language.
With its mix of independent filmmaking and community participation, the Bainbridge Island Film Festival offers more than a weekend of entertainment—it’s an exploration of the ways film can inspire empathy and creativity. Whether you’re a devoted cinephile or a casual viewer looking to experience something new, BIFF 2025 invites you to discover how global stories come to life in the heart of Bainbridge Island.

BIMA Mercado
The Bainbridge Island Museum of Art (BIMA) will debut its first-ever BIMA Mercado on November 8, offering visitors an immersive experience that celebrates Northwest Latine and Hispanic artistry, tradition, and community. Coinciding with the museum’s annual Día de los Muertos and Día de los Muertos and Beyond II exhibitions, this one-day event transforms the museum’s store and galleries into a lively marketplace filled with color, craft, and cultural expression.
Open to the public from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with an exclusive member-only hour beginning at 9 a.m., the Mercado blends shopping, art appreciation, and cultural celebration. It highlights the creativity of local and regional Latine and Hispanic artists, offering an opportunity for visitors to engage directly with makers whose work reflects a wide spectrum of heritage and contemporary design. From handcrafted jewelry and ceramics to textiles, prints, and traditional artisan goods, the Mercado showcases the richness of the communities it represents.
Among the featured vendors are artists such as Alice Mendoza, who sells Mexican-made earrings to support charitable causes, and Maritza Leon (The Introverted Potter), known for her expressive ceramic pieces. Suleiny Altamirano of Tizana Mexicana brings authentic artisan goods from Mexico, while Irma Rubio of Piñata Party WA offers her playful, handmade piñatas. The lineup also includes creators like Calin Garcia (jewelry), Leilani Urquieta (@alohalanicitart, prints and stickers), Maria de la Luz Rosario (textile art and clothing), and Carolina Ramirez (Tozi Tea), whose tea and wellness products emphasize cultural connection through flavor and tradition.
For BIMA members, the Mercado includes special perks: early access to shop, a 20% discount on regularly stocked Museum Store products, and raffle opportunities throughout the day. While the discount doesn’t extend to vendor-made goods, the event’s focus is on fostering community exchange rather than commercial promotion. It’s a chance for members and visitors alike to experience BIMA not just as a museum, but as a living cultural space that brings people together through art and celebration.
Set within the BIMA Store, Orientation Gallery, and Beacon Gallery, the Mercado complements the ongoing Día de los Muertos exhibition, which honors memory, heritage, and creative continuity. The debut of BIMA Mercado represents an expansion of that mission—an open invitation to celebrate the artistry and voices that shape the Northwest’s cultural landscape.
