November on Bainbridge Island promises a variety of unique events that blend seasonal celebrations, cultural exploration, and live music. Kicking things off, the Teen Fright Night Lock-In offers a thrilling evening at the library for local teens who want to enjoy Halloween fun in a safe, immersive setting. Participants will be “locked in” for the night, where they’ll get creative by making “zombie Barbies,” catch a scary movie, and partake in a variety of Halloween-inspired activities designed for a spooky but fun night out. This is a free, registration-required event for teens, who must submit emergency contact information to complete their reservation.

On October 26, Cider and Squash at Bloedel Reserve invites visitors to celebrate the season with a full day of autumnal activities in a serene, natural setting. Kids can dress up in their Halloween costumes and set out on a “squash hunt” through the Reserve’s beautiful fall gardens, locating various types of squash and pumpkins with the help of a map. A tape bracelet craft lets children decorate with natural findings as they wander the grounds, adding a hands-on element to the experience. Guests can also stop for photos with giant pumpkins, and families can even enter a guessing contest to win passes to the Reserve or a Friends and Family membership. Timed tickets for this event include admission and a cup of hot cider, giving visitors the perfect fuel for their adventure.

The evening of November 2 brings COS.MO.SIS to Rolling Bay Hall, where Bainbridge residents can experience an energetic fusion of Latin and funk rhythms led by acclaimed musicians Yusa and Marina Albero. The group features an impressive lineup, including vocalist and instrumentalist SerenaSounds, saxophonist Jackson Cotugno, and drummer Josh Setala. Known for a style that weaves the sounds of Cuba, Spain, and the Pacific Northwest, the band promises a night filled with thrilling grooves, captivating melodies, and an invitation to get up and dance. This standing-room event creates a lively, inclusive atmosphere for audiences of all ages. While a limited number of reserved seats are available for those with limited mobility, most will be on their feet, moving to the music and joining in the joyful energy of this performance.

From spooky fun and harvest celebrations to music that brings people together, Bainbridge Island’s November events offer something for every taste and interest, creating a memorable start to the fall season.

Día de Los Muertos Community Celebrations

Bainbridge Island Museum of Art (BIMA) is hosting its annual Día de los Muertos Community Celebrations on Saturday, November 2, a vibrant event that offers an immersive cultural experience focused on honoring loved ones who have passed. This year, there are two free, ticketed ceremonies led by Alice Mendoza, scheduled for 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. To ensure space and comfort for all attendees, reservations are required, making it a well-organized and accessible event for the community.

The day begins with an enchanting opening procession featuring children in butterfly costumes, symbolizing the connection between butterflies and the souls of the deceased in Mexican culture. This procession will lead attendees from the Kids Discovery Museum (KiDiMu) down a flower-lined path into BIMA’s galleries. Once inside, visitors will find an array of activities, music, and art stations, all set up to create an interactive, educational experience.

At the heart of the event is a traditional ofrenda, or altar, a central piece of Día de los Muertos celebrations. This year’s altar is a vibrant, multi-paneled shrine designed by artist Araceli Cruz, meant to serve as a space for remembering and honoring those who have passed. The community is invited to contribute to the ofrenda, adding mementos, photos, or personal stories to make the altar a shared, living tribute.

Throughout the day, guests can enjoy traditional Mexican refreshments, including samples of pan de muerto (a sweet bread typically enjoyed during Día de los Muertos) and Mexican hot chocolate or atole, a warm, comforting drink made from masa. Additional hands-on activities include make-and-take art stations, where attendees can create small crafts inspired by Mexican cultural themes. Traditional face painting will also be available, allowing guests to decorate their faces with iconic sugar skull designs or other symbolic images associated with the holiday.

Adding to the ambiance, musicians will be strolling throughout the galleries, performing Mexican folk songs that enhance the celebration’s joyful and reflective mood. These live performances provide a meaningful soundtrack to the day’s events, bridging cultural understanding through music.

BIMA’s Día de los Muertos celebration provides a respectful and community-centered way to experience this rich Mexican tradition. With free admission and a structured, engaging program, it’s an opportunity for individuals and families to learn about and participate in the customs and meaning of Día de los Muertos.
