Three touchstones as we begin 2026
January tends to arrive quietly. After a year that asked for resilience, restraint, and clarity, I find myself drawn to things that feel grounded—ideas and places that remind us how meaning is built over time, not in moments of urgency.
These are three I’ve been returning to as we step into the year ahead.
Some books answer questions. Others completely change the questions you’re asking. Sapiens is one of those books.
Harari has a remarkable ability to zoom out from the day to day and look at humanity from 30,000 feet. He challenges assumptions about everything from money and governments to business, religion, and culture. Whether you agree with every conclusion almost becomes secondary. The real gift is that it forces you to reconsider ideas you’ve accepted without ever realizing you accepted them.
I’ve found myself thinking about it long after putting the book down. That’s usually my measure of a great read.
The older I get, the more I appreciate stories that aren’t driven by explosions or plot twists. They’re driven by people. The Four Seasons beautifully captures the complexity of long friendships, marriage, parenting, growing older, and learning to navigate change with grace. It’s funny without trying too hard and honest in a way that feels familiar. It’s one of those shows that quietly reminds you how meaningful ordinary life can be. Witty, frothy and a perfect summer show to fold laundry.
One of the things I appreciate most about living on Bainbridge is having institutions that consistently elevate the conversation.
The Bainbridge Island Museum of Art has built an incredible collection of online programming that brings artists, authors, makers, and creative thinkers into your living room. Whether the topic is art, design, culture, or the creative process itself, I almost always walk away seeing something a little differently than I did before.
You don’t have to be an artist to appreciate it. In fact, I think that’s the beauty of it. Creativity has a way of making us better problem solvers, better observers, and more thoughtful leaders, regardless of what we do for a living. It’s a reminder that learning doesn’t always have to be practical to be valuable. Sometimes the most worthwhile investment is simply expanding your perspective.
