We have officially entered into the big grey. I’m getting ready for next year already and spending some time prepping photography for some beautiful waterfront listings that will be coming our way in the spring– so with that workflow- I’m getting a fair amount of windshield time these days. I wanted to share some intentional listening that’s been filling my day and fueling my heart.
This I Believe: The Personal Philosophies of Remarkable Men (and Women)
This collection of short essays, each rooted in someone’s core belief, came into my hands just when I needed clarity. In the whirlwind of real estate, client calls, staging homes, and juggling family time, it’s easy to move on autopilot. This book asks: What do you believe?
I first bought this book in print 20 years ago and then again in audio and it’s been a touchstone that I’ve come back to again and again. This is not a “new” recommendation– This program started in 1951 on CBS Radio hosted by Edward R. Murrow with the aim of inviting the regular along with the notable and famous to write a short essay based on the prompt “this I believe…” Contributors ranged from world‐famous figures (e.g., Eleanor Roosevelt, Helen Keller, Harry S. Truman) to everyday people — taxi drivers, homemakers, immigrants. The essays intentionally emphasized personal conviction rather than institutional or doctrinal belief — what one individual holds as their rule of life.
The essay I’d encourage you to read is by Deirdre Sullivan and google tells me that this was published in 2014. Her essay is about her dad’s advice to Always go to the funeral. Showing up for others in times of loss is often inconvenient or uncomfortable but it communicates presence, care and respect. I remember when I heard this first and how it hit me like a gut punch– I didn’t come up with it but I can’t think of a better encapsulation or simple philosophy for the human I want to be. I’m happy to give credit to Ms. Sullivan and her dad– but this has become core for me.
A client (and friend) recently invited Ani and I to Dua Lipa here in Seattle. It was incredible– but while I was listening to her music I came across Apple Music Concert Set Lists. It’s a compilation of music from shows that artists generally perform in the order of the show. I’ve been digging deep into this — it’s a fun way to explore an artists compilation in the way that they want you to experience their storytelling.
3 Books with Neil Pasricha
Neil Pasricha interviews people from all walks of life about the three books that shaped them. The conversations are warm, curious, and quietly brilliant—from bestselling authors to small-business owners. I love it for the book recommendations for sure– I’m a huge reader. I love it even more for the WHY. It’s a great blend of human centered stories with a diversity of perspectives. A good place to start is Brene Brown or Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. It’s published weekly and is generally under an hour– low commitment to give it a shot!
