September 2023 Top 3

Boy, fall has been beautiful so far. I’ve heard that we are in for the big turn soon so of course I am thinking about snuggling in with a fire and pulling up a good book. I like many families have found September to fly by with the a frenetic energy and am looking forward to getting into the swing of the fall schedule.

Here are a few things that are occupying me these days— all of which are fantastic for a cozy night by the fire.

Connections, a new game on the NYT crossword app.

This is my new favorite game to play with a kiddo— it’s a perfect little logic conversation and I look forward to it every morning.

How it works:

Find a group of four items that share something in common and hit submit.   Find the four common groups without making a mistake.

Category examples:

Fish: Bass, Flounder, Salmon, Trout

Fire___: Ant, Drill, Island, Opal

Here is the preview from today:

Devil in the White City by Erik Larson.

This represents some of my favorite types of non-fiction— scale and intimacy combined. This historical account is set in lead up to the 1883 World’s Fair and the horrific crimes of HH Holmes. The backdrop of the fair, a spectacle of innovation, advancement and progress is also the trap for many young women who are lured there by this serial killer. It has great backstory on the architects, designers and builders as well as great analysis of the pathology and psychology of the serial killer. It’s also great for the Chicago lovers amongst us. Get it here.

This is really Deirdre’s blanket but I often steal it. This little blanket really is the softest of the soft. It came to us by way of one of my fabulous sister’s in law.  The Lil’ Marsh is a perfect lap blanket for a cozy night in.
