August 2022 Top 3
1. The Bear on Hulu and the article: A Glossary Explaining Why "The Bear" Is The Greatest Fictional Work About the Kitchen by Abe Beam.
If you've spent five minutes with me in the last two months, I can just about guarantee that I've gushed about The Bear. So, I'll skip over that and bring an article about the restaurant industry and how a vet would break down the restaurant scenes, culture of a kitchen and operations of an elite kitchen. It's wonderful reading for those that are interested in all things- being human, organizational behavior and food!
2. Five Nights At Memorial
I read this book a couple years back and it moved me. The book details the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina at Memorial Medical Center in New Orleans in August 2005, and is an expansion of a Pulitzer Prize-winning article written by Fink and published in The New York Times Magazine in 2009. It describes the events that took place at Memorial Medical Center over five days as thousands of people were trapped in the hospital without power. The triage system put into effect deprioritized critically ill patients for evacuation, and it was later alleged that a number of these patients were euthanized by medical and nursing staff shortly before the entire hospital was evacuated on the fifth day of the crisis. Apple TV has developed this into a miniseries that I will be enjoying later this month, but in the interim- I recommend the book. It's fascinating and devastating.
3. JONI! Joni Mitchell performs with our girl Brandi Carlile at the Newport Folk Festival and the world is transfixed. All the feels.
Happy Summer!
