As the days grow longer and the island bursts into spring color, Bainbridge Island’s calendar is filling with vibrant events that celebrate creativity, community, and culture. May is the perfect time to gather with neighbors, explore new experiences, and support local artists, performers, and organizations making a real difference. This month, there’s something for everyone—whether you’re drawn to the colorful world of musical theater, eager to experience the warmth and traditions of Pacific Islander culture, or passionate about supporting LGBTQ+ pride and visibility. Each event brings a unique flavor to the Bainbridge community, offering opportunities not just to be entertained, but to be connected, inspired, and uplifted. From the high-energy, family-friendly fun of The SpongeBob Musical at Bainbridge Performing Arts, to the rich cultural celebration of Pacific Horizons: A Community Lū’au at the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art, to the heartfelt giving and camaraderie of Sunday FUNDday at Eleven Winery in support of Kitsap Pride, these experiences remind us of the power of gathering and the joy that comes from celebrating our shared humanity. Whether you are a lifelong Bainbridge resident or visiting the island for the first time, these events invite you to step into the heart of the community and experience the passion, artistry, and resilience that define it. In a world that often feels hurried and divided, moments like these—singing along with SpongeBob, weaving leis by hand, or toasting with friends in support of a vital cause—serve as beautiful reminders of the good that comes when we show up for one another. This May, make space on your calendar not just for events, but for memories that will linger long after the last song is sung and the final lei is tied. Bainbridge Island is ready to welcome you with open arms, a vibrant spirit, and a full calendar of reasons to celebrate.

Pacific Horizons: A Community Lū’au

On Saturday, May 3, from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Bainbridge Island Museum of Art (BIMA) invites the community to come together for Pacific Horizons: A Community Lū’au—a vibrant celebration honoring the rich cultures of Micronesia, Melanesia, and Polynesia.

This inaugural event offers a full day of activities, performances, and food that highlight the beauty, resilience, and traditions of Pacific Islander communities. Throughout BIMA’s spaces, visitors can shop, eat, create, and dance, experiencing the joy and interconnectedness that define island cultures.

The festivities begin with a bustling vendor market in the Plaza, featuring island-inspired foods and goods from local Pacific Islander small businesses. Attendees can savor dishes from Ray & Dees Chamorro and Tolu: Modern Fijian Cuisine, cool off with His Ohana Shave Ice, or enjoy fresh beverages from Main Squeeze Lemonade. Artisan vendors such as Ocean Dance Transformational Healing Arts and Kola Kreations will offer handmade crafts and gifts.

Inside the museum, hands-on activities invite all ages to connect with tradition in a personal way. A lei-making workshop, open from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM and again from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM, blends Pacific and Pacific Northwest materials in a creative tribute to the cultures and the land. Families and friends can also join in traditional Pacific games like Pass the Coconut, the Māori String Game, and Konane, creating a lively and inclusive atmosphere.

A highlight of the day will be the live performance and hula lesson by Sunshine From Polynesia at 2:00 PM in the BIMA Buxton Auditorium. With over 30 years dedicated to preserving the art of hula, Sunshine From Polynesia offers an authentic and inspiring experience for all who attend.

Throughout the afternoon, music will fill the air, with a playlist curated by community choice and opportunities for open mic performances—encouraging everyone to share in the spirit of the islands.

Pacific Horizons: A Community Lū’au is made possible through the collaboration of Melanesian Women Today, Wing Luke Museum, and Town & Country Market. Together, they have created a day that promises connection, celebration, and a deeper appreciation for Pacific Islander cultures.

The event is free and open to all, welcoming the entire Bainbridge Island community to experience the warmth and vibrancy of a lū’au like no other.

Sunday FUNDday: Kitsap Pride

On Sunday, May 4, from 12:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Eleven Winery on Bainbridge Island invites the community to come together for a special Sunday FUNDday benefiting Kitsap Pride. This feel-good event combines wine, community spirit, and a commitment to supporting the LGBTQ+ community across Kitsap County.

Throughout the day, Eleven Winery will donate 100% of tasting fees and glass pour sales, along with 10% of all bottle purchases, directly to Kitsap Pride. It’s an opportunity to enjoy a relaxing afternoon of wine tasting while contributing to an organization that uplifts and celebrates diversity, resilience, and community connection.

Kitsap Pride’s journey began more than 25 years ago with a modest gathering of just 35 attendees. Over the decades, it has grown into a thriving annual festival that now welcomes over 6,000 participants. From its early days at Scenic Beach State Park and Fox Farm to its first public event at Evergreen Park in 2005, Kitsap Pride has consistently shown the power of perseverance and the importance of safe, inclusive spaces for all.

Even during the uncertainties of 2020, Kitsap Pride found ways to keep its community connected through initiatives like Pride-in-a-Box. In the years since, the festival has continued to flourish, featuring over 100 booths, live performances by artists like Tacocat and Frenchie Davis, and an energetic beer garden and food court. Beyond the annual festival, the Kitsap Pride Network, established in 2007, ensures that the work of advocacy, support, and celebration continues year-round.

Sunday FUNDday offers a chance to support this important work in a casual, welcoming setting. Whether you're a longtime advocate, a new supporter, or simply looking for a meaningful way to spend your afternoon, this event promises good wine, good company, and a great cause.

Join us at Eleven Winery, located at 7671 Northeast Day Road West, and raise a glass to community, pride, and progress. Every sip helps make a difference.
