On Sunday, April 27, 2025, Bainbridge Island will be buzzing with a variety of community-centered events focused on creativity, environmental stewardship, and family-friendly education, offering residents and visitors several meaningful ways to engage with the local landscape and one another. From hands-on sustainability projects to immersive nature activities, the day is packed with opportunities to connect, learn, and contribute. At the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art, the ReFashion Sewdown invites makers to participate in an all-day sewing session focused on reuse and creative repurposing of materials. From 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., participants will design and construct wearable pieces using upcycled textiles, culminating in a public showcase of their work from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. The event is part of the long-running ReFashion Bainbridge initiative and continues its mission of encouraging sustainable fashion through community involvement. Meanwhile, just a few miles away at Bloedel Reserve, the Earth Day Celebration offers a rich lineup of activities for families and nature lovers alike. Running from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., the celebration includes nature walks for children, outdoor art activities like leaf rubbing and rock painting, and an educational pollinator walk led by a certified horticulturist. Visitors can also enjoy coffee, donuts, and pizza from local vendors and explore an indoor exhibit titled Nature & the Book: 2025. In addition, the Reserve will host a plant sale featuring offerings from local growers and nurseries, with free saplings available for members and volunteers while supplies last. Simultaneously, the City Nature Challenge, part of a global biodiversity initiative, will take place at Bloedel from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., where registered participants will document native species such as birds, mosses, and fungi using the iNaturalist app. Pre-registration is required for this segment due to limited parking and early entry logistics. For those focused on land care and habitat restoration, another key opportunity takes place from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Bainbridge Disposal Transfer Station, where residents can drop off invasive plant species at no cost as part of the Free Invasive Weed Disposal event, hosted by the Bainbridge Island Land Trust. Accepted species include English ivy, Himalayan blackberry, Scotch broom, and others on the countyโs noxious weed list. Staff and volunteers will be on hand to verify plant materials and assist with unloading, and a separate entry line will streamline the process for drop-offs. Together, these events offer a diverse snapshot of Bainbridge Islandโs active civic lifeโblending art, ecology, and community collaboration into a single day. Whether you're threading a needle at the art museum, pulling weeds for habitat health, or watching your child marvel at native bees during a nature walk, April 27 provides a full schedule of purposeful engagement that reflects the islandโs values of sustainability, education, and creative expression.

ReFashion Sewdown
On Sunday, April 27, 2025, the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art will host the ReFashion Sewdown, an evolution of the annual ReFashion Show. Running from 10:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., this yearโs event brings a new twist to the familiar celebration of sustainable fashion by shifting the focus from a traditional runway to a full-day collaborative sewing event, followed by a public showcase of the participants' creations.
The ReFashion Sewdown invites local artists, designers, and community members to spend the day sewing, mending, and constructing garments using reused and repurposed materials. This sewing blitz will culminate in an informal presentation from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., where the dayโs efforts will be shared with the public. The event remains true to its original purpose: to promote sustainability, creativity, and community through fashion.
Organized by ReFashion Bainbridge, a program of Sustainable Bainbridge, this initiative has been a staple of the community since its founding in 2016. Under the direction of Naomi Spinak, the ReFashion Show has grown into a platform for education and inspiration around environmentally conscious clothing practices. By shifting to the Sewdown format, the event places a stronger emphasis on the creative process itself, encouraging hands-on learning and shared experience among participants.
The event also offers an opportunity for makers to work in real-time collaboration or side-by-side with others, making visible the work that often goes on behind the scenes. From amateur menders to professional designers, the Sewdown invites a range of skill levels and styles, all united by a common goal: to rethink waste and celebrate resourceful fashion design.
Anyone interested in participating had to submit their entry by March 23, 2025. Specific entry categories and guidelines are available on the ReFashion Bainbridge website, providing detailed information on acceptable materials, project expectations, and submission logistics.
The ReFashion Sewdown is free and open to the public during the evening showcase. Whether you're a participant or an observer, the event offers a unique window into the creativity and dedication behind sustainable fashion in action.

Free Invasive Weed Disposal
On Sunday, April 27, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Bainbridge Island residents will have another opportunity to participate in the Free Invasive Weed Disposal event, hosted at the Bainbridge Disposal Transfer Station at 7215 Vincent Road. This initiative, organized by the Bainbridge Island Land Trust, is designed to support community efforts in managing invasive plant species and maintaining the health of local landscapes.
This event provides a no-cost way to responsibly dispose of common invasive plants. Residents are encouraged to clear their yards of species like English ivy, Scotch broom, English holly, Himalayan blackberry, English laurel, tansy ragwort, and other plants listed on Kitsap Countyโs official noxious weed list. The Land Trust is covering all associated costs for disposal, making it easier for community members to contribute to land stewardship efforts across the island.
To streamline the process, a separate check-in line will be set up at the entrance to the Transfer Station specifically for participants bringing invasive weeds. There is no limit to the quantity of material that can be dropped off. Upon arrival, staff and volunteers will be available to inspect incoming plant material to ensure it meets the criteria and to assist with unloading.
Itโs important to note that only invasive species will be acceptedโno general yard waste or non-invasive trimmings should be mixed in. If youโre unsure whether a particular plant is eligible, you're encouraged to reach out to the Land Trust Stewardship Manager, Andrew Fraser, via email or by calling (206) 842-1216 in advance of the event.
This event not only helps individuals tackle persistent and difficult-to-manage weeds but also contributes to broader ecological restoration goals on Bainbridge Island. Removing invasive species helps protect native habitats, improve soil health, and reduce fire risk. The April 27 session is the final day of this yearโs two-day disposal opportunity, following the initial event held on April 20.
Whether youโve been working on a major landscape clean-up or just need to get rid of some unwanted ivy or blackberry brambles, this is a convenient and environmentally responsible way to clear out invasive vegetation.

Know before you go:
Invasive plant species are one of the leading causes of vegetation biodiversity loss. They spread quickly and can displace native plants, prevent new native plant growth, and create monocultures. Lack of diversity among native plants reduces the quality and quantity of fish and wildlife habitat. Remove your invasives now while the ground is soft and make room for native plants come fall and winter when the weather is best for planting!
