As August winds down, Bainbridge Island takes on a special kind of magic. The days are still long, the air warm with late-summer sun, and the community seems to collectively pause to savor these last golden moments before autumn arrives. For islanders, it’s not just about squeezing in one more picnic or beach day—it’s about gathering together, celebrating the arts, and enjoying the kind of experiences that make Bainbridge such a unique place to live and visit.

Community events are woven into the island’s character, offering opportunities for neighbors to connect, families to create traditions, and visitors to feel part of something meaningful. The final week of August is a perfect snapshot of this spirit, with a trio of events that showcase Bainbridge’s creativity, culture, and sense of fun. From a sprawling summer festival to a starry outdoor movie night, and finally a soulful jazz concert at the winery, the island is brimming with ways to connect, unwind, and celebrate together.

At the heart of these gatherings is a focus on the arts. Bainbridge has long been a haven for artists, musicians, and makers who draw inspiration from the island’s natural beauty and supportive community. Events like these highlight the diversity of creative expression here, while also inviting audiences to experience it firsthand—whether through live music, interactive art stations, or simply being swept up in the atmosphere of a performance.

Food and drink are equally central to these late-summer celebrations. The island’s local vendors and wineries turn up to share their craft, adding flavor to the festivities and reminding attendees of the region’s rich culinary scene. From international street food to refreshing Italian ice, and from picnics on the grass to a glass of wine at the vineyard, the week’s events are as much about taste as they are about sound and sight.

Of course, there’s also the joy of gathering outdoors, something Bainbridge residents and visitors cherish. The island’s natural settings—whether it’s the open fields of Battle Point Park, the lush gardens of Bloedel Reserve, or the cozy winery grounds—offer a stunning backdrop for community connection. These spaces transform into stages, theaters, and gathering spots where everyone is welcome to share in the experience.

Perhaps what makes these events especially meaningful is their accessibility. Admission to Movies in the Park is completely free, while the Summer Social welcomes kids and teens at no cost. Families can enjoy high-quality arts and entertainment without breaking the bank, creating traditions that can be passed down year after year.

As Bainbridge shifts toward September, these gatherings are more than just entertainment—they’re a reminder of the importance of slowing down, connecting, and making memories. Whether it’s kids with painted faces laughing on the Bloedel lawns, families stargazing before a movie, or friends sipping wine to the sound of saxophone, the island’s final week of August is about celebrating the season together.

Here’s a closer look at three events you won’t want to miss.

The Summer Social

Bainbridge Island is sending summer off in style with The Summer Social, happening Thursday, August 29, from 2:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the beautiful Bloedel Reserve. More than just an afternoon outdoors, the event is designed as a gathering of food, art, music, and community—an ideal way to savor the last golden days of summer.

Guests are encouraged to pack a picnic blanket and settle in for a relaxed day filled with activities for all ages. The event is set against the natural backdrop of the Reserve, offering space to stroll the gardens, enjoy lawn games, or simply stretch out under the late-summer sun. A family-friendly craft station and free face painting by Art Monster Face Painting will keep younger guests entertained, while adults can enjoy the 21+ beer garden featuring local beverages.

Music takes center stage later in the day with a performance by the Tony & Trevor Quartet, a Northwest jazz-focused ensemble playing live from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. Their smooth, lively sound promises to be the perfect soundtrack for a laid-back afternoon.

Food lovers will also find plenty to enjoy. Local vendors will be serving up a variety of flavors, from West African dishes by Aunty Dolly’s to island favorites like Bluetree Bainbridge and Corrigan Sisters. Sweet treats and global bites round out the menu with Harris and Sons Italian Ice, La Churreria J&J, One Two Kai Kitchen, Sauced, and The Saucy Sailor. With such a diverse lineup, there’s something to please every palate.

Art, of course, is woven throughout the day. Visitors can meet Kelly Johnston, Bloedel Community Creative, whose landscape paintings will be displayed at the very sites that inspired them. Printmakers Lynne Rosskamp and Amanda Danford will demonstrate techniques such as chine-collé and mokuhanga, a traditional Japanese woodblock style. The Residence will also host 10 Years of Creative Residencies, a special exhibit celebrating a decade of work by the many artists, writers, musicians, and storytellers who have drawn inspiration from Bloedel Reserve.

Tickets are required for entry. Members can attend for free with a reservation, while non-member tickets are priced at $35 for adults, $25 for seniors, and free for visitors 17 and under.

Whether you’re drawn by the art, the live music, or the simple joy of connecting with friends and neighbors outdoors, The Summer Social offers a little something for everyone. Movies in the Park | Aug 29 – Galaxy Quest

Friday nights in August on Bainbridge Island are made for blankets, popcorn, and the glow of the big screen under the stars. Movies in the Park, held at the Battle Point Observatory field, offers just that—a chance to come together as a community and enjoy summer nights with classic films, games, and themed activities.

Seating opens at 8:00 p.m., when families, couples, and friends spread out across the grassy field with beach chairs and picnic blankets to claim their favorite spots. As the sun slips lower, free popcorn is served, lawn games kick off, and the Kitsap Regional Library leads pre-movie activities connected to the evening’s feature. The movie itself begins roughly 30 minutes after sunset, when the sky is dark enough to let the outdoor screen glow to life.

This week’s feature, playing Friday, August 29, is the sci-fi comedy Galaxy Quest. Beloved by fans since its release in 1999, the film follows the washed-up cast of a cult space TV series who are mistaken for real heroes by an alien race. Called upon to save both Earth and their extraterrestrial allies from a reptilian warlord, the actors must step into their old roles for real. Rated PG, the movie offers family-friendly laughs, sharp satire, and a nostalgic nod to space-faring adventures.

Fittingly, this week is also Astro Night at Battle Point Park. Before the movie begins, visitors will have the chance to turn their eyes to the skies with the help of the Battle Point Astronomical Association. The group will set up telescopes for stargazing, offering guests a rare opportunity to spot planets, constellations, and perhaps even a shooting star. Pairing astronomy with a space-themed movie creates an evening where science and imagination intertwine, making it one of the most memorable nights of the summer lineup.

The best part? Admission to Movies in the Park is completely free. With ample on-site parking and no tickets required, it’s an easy way for families to enjoy an affordable night out together. The atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming—kids can stretch out on the grass, friends can share snacks, and everyone gets to experience the communal joy of watching a story unfold under the open sky.

As the season winds down, Movies in the Park captures the magic of summer evenings: a blend of laughter, connection, and the simple pleasure of being outdoors together. For Bainbridge residents, it’s an annual tradition worth circling on the calendar.

Live music at the Winery: Kareem Kandi

Bainbridge Island’s late-summer rhythm continues on Sunday, August 31, with an intimate afternoon of live music at the Winery featuring saxophonist Kareem Kandi. From 2:00 to 5:00 p.m., guests will have the chance to unwind with world-class jazz in a relaxed, scenic setting that perfectly pairs music, community, and the island’s celebrated wines.

A Tacoma native, Kandi has earned recognition throughout the Pacific Northwest and beyond as a versatile performer, composer, and educator. His artistry spans genres—jazz, blues, classical, and funk—infusing each performance with a dynamic energy that is both soulful and accessible. Known for weaving together timeless jazz standards with original works, Kandi’s sets offer listeners a fresh yet familiar experience, whether they’re longtime jazz enthusiasts or simply curious newcomers.

What sets Kandi apart is not only his skill on stage but also his commitment to sharing music as a tool for connection and learning. Beyond his active performing career, he devotes significant time to education as an ensemble coach, program director, and mentor to young musicians across the region. His presence on Bainbridge offers islanders more than a concert—it’s a chance to witness a musician who embodies both technical mastery and a passion for community.

The Winery’s inviting atmosphere makes the perfect backdrop for the performance. Guests can sip locally crafted wines while soaking in the mellow grooves of a Sunday afternoon show. With its open, friendly vibe, the event encourages audiences to gather with friends, enjoy the music, and let the weekend wind down at a slower pace.

For those who appreciate live performance, the event provides an opportunity to experience jazz in its most authentic form: up close, personal, and unfiltered. Kandi’s saxophone has been described as commanding yet fluid, capable of soaring improvisations as well as warm, lyrical tones. Each performance feels unique, shaped in the moment and shared directly with the audience.

The Winery’s live music series has become a staple for Bainbridge’s cultural scene, and Kandi’s appearance promises to be a highlight of the summer calendar. With his reputation for bridging genres and building connections, this afternoon concert will likely resonate far beyond the final note.

Whether you’re a jazz devotee, a wine lover, or simply looking for a soulful way to close out August, Live Music at the Winery: Kareem Kandi offers a perfect blend of artistry, community, and island charm.
