August is in full swing, and Bainbridge Island continues to offer opportunities for residents and visitors alike to connect, explore, and enjoy the best of the season. Whether you're looking for a reason to get outside after dinner, spend time with family, or simply engage with the wider community, thereโ€™s something happening this week that fits the bill.

Each of the following events offers a unique way to experience Bainbridge Islandโ€”through neighborhood connection, outdoor entertainment, or a quiet walk in the woods at dusk. None require tickets or major planning. Just show up, bring what you need to be comfortable, and take part in what makes this island feel like home.

First up is National Night Out, a one-evening event that combines fun activities with a deeper purpose: strengthening the relationship between first responders and the communities they serve. Itโ€™s part block party, part safety fair, and part festival, held in Waterfront Park and open to all ages. With music, food trucks, games, and equipment demos, itโ€™s both an engaging event and a reminder of the collaborative spirit that keeps our neighborhoods safe.

Next, the Movies in the Park series continues at Battle Point Park with a screening of the iconic 1980s film Footloose. Itโ€™s more than just a movie nightโ€”itโ€™s an 80s-themed mini prom, complete with trivia, crafts, and an invitation to dress the part. Whether youโ€™re introducing your kids to a film you grew up with or catching it again under the stars, this event brings together lighthearted nostalgia and a strong sense of community.

Rounding out the week is a slower-paced but no less meaningful gathering: Open Hike Night and Community Campfire at IslandWood. This event offers a self-guided walk through the forest during golden hour, followed by a campfire program with sโ€™mores and optional performances. Itโ€™s a chance to unplug, tune in to the natural world, and share space with others in a relaxed, welcoming setting.

All three events are free to attend, family-friendly, and focused on building community in simple, accessible ways. You donโ€™t need to RSVP or buy anything to participate. Whether youโ€™re new to the island or have lived here for decades, these gatherings offer a chance to see familiar spaces in a new lightโ€”and maybe meet a few neighbors along the way.

National Night Out 2025

On Tuesday, August 5, Bainbridge Island will take part in National Night Out 2025, a nationwide event that brings neighbors together with local law enforcement and first responders in an evening of connection, safety awareness, and family-friendly fun.

Held every year on the first Tuesday of August, National Night Out is celebrated by over 18,000 communities across the country. The Bainbridge Island event will take place at Waterfront Park and City Dock (301 Shannon Drive SE), running throughout the park and surrounding areas. Please note that Brien Drive and the boat launch parking on Shannon Drive will be closed to vehicle traffic during the event.

The gathering is designed to strengthen relationships between residents and public safety officials, helping to build a more engaged and supportive community. Itโ€™s a relaxed, informal way to meet the people who serve the islandโ€”including Bainbridge Island Police, Fire Department, Kitsap County Sheriff, Washington State Patrol, and the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary.

Families can expect a wide range of activities throughout the evening. Kids (and adults) will enjoy field games, face painting, community booths, and a giant inflatable obstacle course. The always-popular Touch-a-Truck experience returns, offering hands-on exploration of police cars, Marine 8, fire engines, and even a demo from the State Patrolโ€™s robot unit.

Local organizations will also be on hand with educational materials, giveaways, and activities. KiDiMu (Kids Discovery Museum) will be present with hands-on fun for younger children, and music throughout the park will keep the energy up.

Food trucks will be on-site offering a variety of options for purchase, so families can plan to grab dinner or snacks while they enjoy the event. Seating is limited, so bringing a picnic blanket or portable chairs is a good idea.

National Night Out is free and open to the public, and no registration is required. Whether you're new to Bainbridge or a longtime resident, itโ€™s a great opportunity to get to know your neighbors and the first responders who help keep the island safe.

Movies In the Park | Aug 8 โ€“ Footloose

Get ready to step back in time this Friday, August 8, as Bainbridge Islandโ€™s Movies in the Park series continues with the 1984 classic Footloose. The event will take place at the Observatory field at Battle Point Park, and admission is completely free.

Seating begins at 8:00 PM, so bring your beach chairs, blankets, and anything else you need to get comfortable. Free popcorn will be available, and ample parking is available on-site. The movie will begin approximately 30 minutes after sunset, giving plenty of time to settle in and enjoy the pre-show festivities.

This weekโ€™s theme? 80s prom nightโ€”a perfect match for Footloose, which tells the story of a teenager from the city who moves to a small town where dancing and rock music are banned. With his energy and determination, he challenges the rules and helps the town rediscover the joy of music and movement.

Before the movie starts, enjoy a series of themed activities designed to bring the 80s to life. Guests are encouraged to wear their best 80s outfitsโ€”think big hair, neon colors, and vintage prom looks. Try your hand at โ€œGuess That 80s Tuneโ€, a fun and casual music trivia game, or get crafty by making your own boutonniere or corsage on-site.

The event is hosted by the Bainbridge Island Metro Park & Recreation District in partnership with the Kitsap Regional Libraryโ€™s Bainbridge Island branch, which helps organize the pre-movie entertainment each week. The atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming, making it a great way to wind down your week, meet neighbors, and enjoy the outdoors.

Footloose is rated PG and runs approximately 1 hour and 47 minutes. While itโ€™s a high-energy film filled with music and dancing, it also explores themes of tradition, change, and personal freedomโ€”all set to an iconic 80s soundtrack.

No tickets or reservations are needed. Just show up, find your spot, and enjoy a community night under the stars.

Whether you're a longtime fan of Footloose or seeing it for the first time, this Fridayโ€™s event promises a memorable evening for all ages.

Open Hike Night & Community Campfire

Looking for a unique way to enjoy a summer evening outdoors? On Saturday, August 10, from 6:00 to 9:00 PM, IslandWood invites the community to experience its trails and gathering spaces in a whole new lightโ€”literallyโ€”with Open Hike Night & Community Campfire.

This all-ages event is designed for casual, self-guided exploration. Visitors can enjoy IslandWoodโ€™s wooded trails during the golden hour, when light and sound shift, and the forest becomes more active with evening wildlife. Youโ€™ll have the chance to spot bats gliding from the ravine, swallows feeding in flight, and possibly even juvenile owls just beginning to explore the treetops. Staff naturalists will be out along the trails to point out highlights and share insights about the animals and plant life that respond to changes in daylight.

Trails open at 6:00 PM, and one trail will accommodate all-terrain strollers. For families with infants, lap-sitting or carriers (like a Baby Bjorn, Ergo, or backpack) are welcome and free of charge.

At 7:00 PM, follow your map back to the main campus for the Community Campfire. There, youโ€™ll find sโ€™mores supplies, water coolers, and a cozy fire waiting. Staff will kick things off with a few skits, and guests are encouraged to join inโ€”bring a song, joke, or short performance if youโ€™d like to participate. All contributions should be family-friendly, and everyone is welcome, whether or not you feel like performing.

This event is a great fit for families, friends, and especially those whoโ€™ve attended IslandWood summer campsโ€”a chance to reconnect with the spaces and staff that made the season memorable. Itโ€™s also a fun and low-pressure way to introduce new visitors to the natural beauty of IslandWoodโ€™s 250-acre campus.

No flashlights or headlamps are needed during the event, as sunset is at 8:30 PM, and the walk back to parking is gently lit with pathway lighting. Please note that, while IslandWood loves animals, pets are not permitted, with the exception of service animals.

Wear comfortable shoes for light hiking, and come ready for a peaceful, interactive evening that blends nature, community, and a little bit of summer magicโ€”no camping gear required.Cost, tickets and logistics:
