As we step into the week, Bainbridge Island has three community events to celebrate history, culture, and the spirit of adventure.

The week kicks off with the "Bainbridge Island Japanese American Exclusion Memorial - Day of Service," a poignant tribute to resilience and remembrance. Organized in collaboration with the Bainbridge Island Parks & Trails Foundation and Bainbridge Island Metro Park & Recreation District, this event invites volunteers of all ages to join hands in honoring the legacy of those affected by Executive Order 9066. From tending to the memorial grounds to engaging in meaningful stewardship activities, participants have the opportunity to pay homage to the past while contributing to the preservation of this important landmark.

Continuing the theme of community engagement, cyclists gear up for the iconic "Chilly Hilly Bicycle Ride," presented by Cascade Bicycle Club. A beloved tradition heralding the start of the cycling season in the Pacific Northwest, Chilly Hilly beckons riders to embark on a scenic journey around Bainbridge Island's picturesque routes. With its rolling hills, breathtaking waterfront views, and festive camaraderie, this event embodies the island's vibrant cycling culture while offering participants a thrilling adventure amidst nature's splendor.

Rounding out the week is a celebration of cinematic excellence at the "Seattle Black Film Festival" hosted by LANGSTON Seattle. Held at the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art (BIMA), this film festival showcases thought-provoking short films and feature-length productions, offering audiences a glimpse into diverse narratives and underrepresented perspectives. Rooted in the legacy of the Langston Hughes Performing Arts Institute, this event honors the rich heritage of Black storytelling while fostering community dialogue and cultural exchange.

From honoring the past to embracing the spirit of exploration and creativity, these events epitomize the diversity and vibrancy of Bainbridge Island's cultural landscape. Whether volunteering at a historic site, pedaling through scenic landscapes, or immersing oneself in cinematic masterpieces, participants are invited to connect with the island's rich tapestry of experiences and forge lasting memories in the company of friends, neighbors, and fellow enthusiasts. So, mark your calendars, gather your loved ones, and embark on a week of discovery, connection, and celebration on Bainbridge Island.

Bainbridge Island Japanese American Exclusion Memorial - Day of Service

On the anniversary of the signing of Executive Order 9066, join the Bainbridge Island Japanese American Exclusion Memorial Association, along with the Bainbridge Island Parks & Trails Foundation and Bainbridge Island Metro Park & Recreation District, for a day of meaningful stewardship at the Bainbridge Island Japanese American Exclusion Memorial. This event presents a unique opportunity for volunteers of all ages to come together and honor the legacy of those affected by the forced removal and incarceration of Japanese Americans during World War II. Throughout the day, volunteers will engage in various tasks aimed at preserving and maintaining the memorial grounds. Activities may include pruning vegetation, removing weeds, spreading mulch, and cleaning outdoor art features. All tools will be provided, ensuring that participants have everything they need to contribute effectively to the preservation efforts. Beyond the tangible impact of their work, volunteers will have the chance to connect with the history and significance of the memorial, gaining a deeper understanding of its importance within the community. This event serves as a powerful reminder of the resilience and strength of those who endured the injustices of the past, while also highlighting the ongoing commitment to preserving their memory for future generations. By participating in this day of stewardship, volunteers play an active role in honoring the past and ensuring that the stories of those affected by Executive Order 9066 are never forgotten. Whether you're a long-time resident or visiting the island for the first time, this volunteer opportunity offers a meaningful way to engage with the community and make a positive impact on the Bainbridge Island Japanese American Exclusion Memorial.

Seattle Black Film Festival

LANGSTON Seattle in partnership with Living Arts Cultural Heritage is proud to bring its Seattle Black Film Festival to BIMA for an afternoon of thought provoking short films, one feature length film, and a post screening discussion.

About Langston

LANGSTON is a non-profit arts organization, established in 2016 to lead programming within the historic Langston Hughes Performing Arts Institute.

LANGSTON guides generative programs and community partnerships that center Black art, artists, and audiences that honor the ongoing legacy of Seattle’s Black Central Area. This reflects community recommendations from a three-year stakeholder engagement process led by the Seattle Office of Arts & Culture with the vision of transforming the Langston Hughes Performing Arts Institute into an independent and thriving arts organization. LANGSTON, the culmination of that process, is envisioned as strong stewardship for a Black arts and cultural hub in Seattle. For more information visit langstonseattle.org

About Seattle Black Film Festival

Formerly Langston Hughes African American Film Festival, Seattle Black Film Festival was established in 2003 by Artistic Director Jacqueline Moscou. The first Langston Hughes African American Film Festival was a production of the Langston Hughes Performing Arts Center. From the start, the Langston Hughes African American Film Festival (LHAAFF) sought to give audiences access to underrepresented perspectives and emerging filmmakers from across the African diaspora. Curator Zola Mumford researched and programmed films from many different countries and genres.

Mumford invited Karen Toering, a media producer and a leader in nonprofit arts and funding organizations, to join the festival in 2004. With Toering as Program Director, the festival grew from three days of films and discussions to nine.

Over the years, guests and participating filmmakers included Charles Burnett; Ava DuVernay; St. Clair Bourne; Zeinabu Irene Davis; Katherine Cheairs; Danny Glover; Brazilian director Joel Zito Araujo; Jayne Cortez; James Spooner (Afropunk); Tionna McClodden; David Walker; and many others. The festival has shown early films by Ava DuVernay, Barry Jenkins, Tchaiko Omawale, and dozens of other filmmakers now working in film, television, comics, and other creative forms.

Filmmaker and organizer Andrea Stuart-Lehalle joined the team in 2015, returning to the United States after almost 15 years working in the Czech Republic, France, Morocco and other countries, shooting and presenting films and video. Following changes to the administrative structure of the Langston Hughes Performing Arts Institute (LHPAI), the festival became a production of LANGSTON, and scaled to the current 4 day-long event. In 2019, Langston Hughes African American Film Festival changed its name to Seattle Black Film Festival, to be more inclusive and representative of the festivals goals.

LANGSTONS Seattle Black Film Festival will bring together filmmakers, community members and creative leaders for a celebration of Black brilliance at the Langston Hughes Performing Arts Institute in Seattles Central District, keep your eye out for 2024 dates at https://www.langstonseattle.org/sbff/
