February 2024 Top 3
As we navigate through February, a month rich with history and achievement, it's vital to shine a light on a spectrum of narratives. Black History Month stands as a testament to this, urging us to explore and honor the profound impact of African Americans.
Harry Belafonte
For some reason in late 2023, I got in a habit of playing "Harry Belafonte Radio" on Alexa during the ride to school. I think I may have been inspired by the annual showing of Beetlejuice... but regardless, I'm a recent fan of Mr. Belafonte. What I have been more appreciative lately is his work beyond performance. He was a force to be reckoned with, making significant contributions to the music industry and social movements worldwide. He was massively famous for his time with his Calypso album in 1956 became the first LP to sell over a million copies and was the first African-American produce to win an Emmy for Tonight with Belafonte. He was also staunch civil rights advocate, Belafonte used his platform to champion causes close to his heart. He was a confidante of Martin Luther King Jr., supported anti-apartheid movements, and participated actively in humanitarian efforts. He also advocated for artists' involvement in activism, igniting passions within them to use their platforms for justice.
Beyond borders, Belafonte's influence reached into humanitarian work, notably as an appointed UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador.
We are the World: The Greatest Night in Pop
The song's genesis is as fascinating as its impact, with Belafonte envisioning a project that could harness the power of music to aid famine relief efforts in Africa. The recording session, held on January 28, 1985, became an unforgettable night of solidarity and creativity. "We are the World" began as a project to utilize the influence of music for aiding famine relief efforts in Africa. This idea came to fruition on January 28, 1985, in a recording session marked by solidarity and creativity to record an anthem to support the people of Ethiopia.
I recently watched the Netflix Documentary The Greatest Night in Pop and I'll say if you are person of a certain generation-- this will hit. My favorite line came from Paul Simon, who amidst an assembly of stars, quipped with dry humor about the sheer magnitude of talent present – "If a bomb falls on this location, Bob Denver is back on Top." I'm pretty sure I had a sweatshirt and or performed that song in elementary school. It was early in the days of artists becoming political and using their talents to participate in broader messages.
Paul City Council Elects All Female City Council
In a historic turn of events, the St. Paul City Council has punched through the proverbial glass ceiling with vigor. The council now boasts an entirely female ensemble — a first in its storied existence. All seven elected council members are women, and all are under 40 years old. Six of them are women of color. I was born in St. Paul and am so proud of Minnesota of their interpretation of representation matters. This landmark achievement isn't merely symbolic; it's empowerment in action. It sends a powerful message about equality and opportunity across all sectors of society, inspiring future generations. Here’s to strong women: may we know them, may we be them, may we raise them. 🥂
