Their "Corks & Canvas: Vintage Skis" painting workshop runs from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM and provides the perfect setting for a relaxed and enjoyable evening. No painting experience is necessary—just come ready to follow step-by-step instructions and create your own beautiful artwork. Winter Skills of a Naturalist: Barking up the Right Tree
On Friday, January 10, 2025, from 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM, IslandWood is hosting a unique "Winter Skills of a Naturalist: Barking Up the Right Tree" event, where you'll have the opportunity to hike through their stunning 250-acre winter woodland. As the leaves have fallen and the trees are revealing their beautiful bark, you'll get an up-close look at the most common tree species on campus and explore the unique features of their bark.
This event is a fantastic way to build your tree identification skills, and once you master these techniques, you'll be able to recognize tree species from a distance, gaining insight into the population density of each species as you wander through the Puget Sound lowlands. Whether you're new to nature or an experienced naturalist, this class offers a great opportunity to learn and enhance your skills in a supportive and welcoming environment.
Don’t worry if you missed the previous sessions in the "Skills of a Naturalist" series—this class is perfect for beginners, and everyone is welcome to join, regardless of experience. As IslandWood says, anyone can be a naturalist if they are a student of the natural world. Bring your curiosity, questions, and knowledge to share with others. It’s going to be an enjoyable and informative session for all!

This class is rain or shine, so please dress in layers and always bring a rain layer, gloves and hat at this time of year. If we cancel due to weather, which is extremely rare, we will send a message in email and by phone as well (windstorm, snowstorm, etc.).
Due to the content and pace of this program, we are listing the suggested age of participation as 10 years and up. The content will be scientific and botanical terminology will be utilized. If you have an older child or youth that would like to enrich their botany knowledge, they are welcome to attend with you. The ticket price is the same. Infants (under one year) worn in a baby backpack, sling, or baby-wearing device by the caregiver are also welcome with you, no ticket needed for an infant.
Please remember our campus policy is ‘no dogs unless they are a service animal.’
We always cap off our hikes with a sweet treat of our homemade cookies too!
