Once upon a time, Debbi and Paul Brainerd had a big, bold vision. The vision was to preserve and transform 255 acres of forest slated for residential development into an environmental center for children without access to outdoor learning. In 2002, after much hard work and immense generosity from early supporters, IslandWood opened its doors to students and educators.
In the twenty years since, IslandWood has exponentially grown from a pilot program located on Bainbridge Island to a nationally recognized organization leading innovative work in multiple locations throughout the Puget Sound region.
