This week on Bainbridge Island we are encouraging you to embrace our ecosystems and preserve the environment. Start your weekend on Saturday morning exploring Birds and Blooms at Springbrook Creek Preserve; discover how species composition and diversity promotes healthy ecosystems. Spend the afternoon learning more about energy efficient vehicles at the Kitsap Electric Vehicle and Bike Expo, while eating good food, and enjoying music by local bands! And on Sunday buy yourself something new to wear at Refashion Bainbridge and in doing so support an initiative of Sustainable Bainbridge to reduce the amount of waste produced by our community. It's time to give back to mother nature!

Birds and Blooms at Springbrook Creek Preserve
Discover the birds and blooms of the Springbrook Creek Preserve. Whether bird or bloom, species composition and diversity are great indicators of ecosystem health. Ecosystems with higher species diversity are more resilient to disturbance and change. Join the guided walk as they take an inventory of the bird and plant species at the newly acquired Springbrook Creek Preserve.
The guides/naturalists will provide species identification tips and information on species’ natural histories.

Know before you go:
Each walk will be limited to 15 registered participants. Pre-registration is required. Parking logistics will be sent to registered participants. Participants should plan to dress for the weather, wear waterproof shoes, and bring field guides and binoculars. They will have some field guides and binoculars available for use.
Field Research and Education Coordinator, Fawn Wagner, will be leading the walk with help from volunteer Jason Descombaz. Fawn has several years of experience working with wildlife on Bainbridge Island with a particular interest in bird species. Jason has a Bachelor of Science in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology with an emphasis on native plant species and provides consultations on native plant gardens.

Kitsap Electric Vehicle and Bike Expo
Learn more about electric vehicles and electric bikes, eat good food, and enjoy music by local bands! You’ll hear presentations by experts and be able to talk with owners of various electric vehicles and electric bikes. And you can even take a ride to experience them for yourself!
Recent years have seen exponential growth in the sale of electric vehicles, as car makers have improved range, provided more models, and increased performance. About 13 percent of new cars sold in 2022 were electric. Similarly, electric bikes are becoming increasingly popular. In 2022, electric bike sales outpaced the combined sales of regular and hybrid bikes.

Refashion Bainbridge Show 2023
Bainbridge Island ReFashion Trashion Show is a fun community event sponsored by Bainbridge Island Zero Waste, an initiative of Sustainable Bainbridge. Zero Waste's mission is to reduce the amount of waste produced by our community, from the purchase of material to disposal, and encourage changes in behavior that lead to the sustainable use of resources. Know before you go:
The fun starts on the trails at 1:00 PM. During your rambles on the trails, you will encounter local models of all ages and talented designers presenting creative garb that spans functional to funky. As a bonus, all of IslandWood’s trail systems will be open at this time for your self-guided exploration.
Intrepid walkers can meet the designers and models in a natural habitat along the IslandWood trails and through different ecosystems such as forest, glade, ravine, marsh and even a freshwater pond. For a more traditional runway, come at 3:15 to see models walking on the stage in the Great Hall and hear judges award prizes. You can have your Fashion TWO WAYS, – just simply add on to your “Trails & Trashion” ticket with the “Runway Show” ticket!
1:00 PM Doors open and Check In Begins in the Welcome Center
1:00 – 3:00 PM Trails Open and Models in select locations as you walk the trails
3:00 PM Models exit the trails in preparation for Runway Show in Great Hall (Guests may continue to walk the trails, visit the treehouses, play field games in the meadows during this time)
3:15 – 4:00 PM *Runway Show in Great Hall (snag your tix early!) (Guests may continue to walk the trails, visit the treehouses, play field games in the meadows during this time)
Entry to the *Runway Show will be a separate list of registrants at the door to the Great Hall, and seating is limited in the Great Hall. Snag your ticket early if you wish to secure a seat for this add-on event.
Join them to get inspired for how to re-use old clothing and make new outfits from old clothing or reclaimed materials. Tablecloths are transformed into evening gowns, kitchen curtains become ruffles, and beaded vests are adorned with discarded corks… the “runway” is one of a kind!
This year the show will be double the fun with outdoor and indoor options for viewers. This year’s categories include:
Mystery Box (they gave them a box of pre-loved textiles, they made something fabulous!)
Upcycled Ready-to-Wear
…and a new category… Connections!
Other optional activities:
Audience Award voting on the trails
A bag and purse swap – Bring one fully functional bag or purse in good condition and take a new-to-you one home!
A sneaker donation fundraiser – only athletic footwear, any condition, with laces tied together; no dress shoes, heels, rain boots, sandals, slip-ons, water socks, wedges, and work boots of any kind.
Both treehouses and the Forest Canopy Tower will be open for your visit, too! They’ll have maps for you so you can find your way around and will be happy to suggest a route that is suitable for your family and abilities. You can visit with the models, ask questions, or just enjoy the campus at your leisure.
All ages welcome! Bring a picnic if you like, pack it in – pack it out. Please no dogs unless they are a service animal. Some of the trails accommodate strollers and wheelchairs, for more information please ask Greeters for the best routes to accommodate your party size and abilities upon arrival.
