MiniMu (FREE Infant and Toddler Program)
The MiniMu at Kids Discovery Museum (KiDiMu) is an exciting and interactive event that provides a world of fun and exploration for both children and their families. Designed to ignite curiosity, creativity, and learning, this event offers a rich tapestry of activities and experiences that captivate young minds and foster a sense of wonder. Every other Wednesday, join parents, toddlers, and caregivers from 10am to 11am to share experiences, play together, and learn from one another. This network is here for you to learn and discuss topics with parenting educators along with providing a space to explore gross motor, fine motor, and cognitive experiences.
MiniMu, a shortened form of Mini Museum, is a carefully crafted exhibition within KiDiMu. It is specifically designed for children between the ages of 2 to 8 years old and their families, making it an inclusive and family-friendly event. As visitors step into this engaging space, they are greeted by a stimulating environment filled with a wide array of hands-on exhibits, activities, and play areas.
At Mini Mu, the first thing that catches the eye is the vibrant and welcoming atmosphere. Children and their families are encouraged to explore, touch, and interact with a variety of exhibits that cover topics ranging from science and technology to arts and culture. This interactive approach is at the heart of Mini Mu, as it fosters a love for learning in young minds.
One of the key highlights of the MiniMu is its dedication to sparking creativity and imagination. Attendees can expect a diverse range of exhibits that promote art, design, and self-expression. Children can engage in activities such as painting, drawing, and sculpture, where they are free to unleash their inner artists and bring their visions to life. Moreover, there are opportunities for them to collaborate and create with others, further enhancing their social and creative skills.
MiniMu also emphasizes the importance of hands-on learning. Visitors can expect a multitude of exhibits that encourage exploration in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). These interactive displays provide a playful way for children to develop problem-solving skills and a deeper understanding of these subjects. From building structures with blocks to experimenting with water flow, Mini Mu's exhibits are designed to make learning a fun and memorable experience.
Additionally, MiniMu frequently updates its exhibits to keep the experience fresh and exciting for repeat visitors. This dynamic approach ensures that families can return to MiniMu and always find something new and intriguing to discover. The event's commitment to ongoing improvement and expansion reflects its dedication to providing the best possible experience for its attendees.
The event is not limited to indoor activities. MiniMu also extends its magic to an outdoor play area. Attendees can expect a safe and inviting outdoor space where children can run, climb, and play in the fresh air. The outdoor area is an extension of the event's commitment to holistic childhood development, ensuring that children have the chance to experience both indoor and outdoor activities.
The MiniMu event doesn't just focus on children; it also caters to the adults accompanying them. Parents and caregivers can expect to find resources and information on early childhood development, educational strategies, and the importance of play in a child's growth. This holistic approach ensures that families leave MiniMu not only with fond memories but also with valuable insights and tools for nurturing their children's growth and development.

Know Before You Go:
BI Reads and WEAVE Presents is excited to host an ALL AGES open-mic Story SLAM event at Rolling Bay Hall. You might be asking, "What is a Story SLAM?" A Story SLAM is just like a Poetry SLAM, but instead of poems, people tell 5 minute stories. These stories typically have a conflict and a resolution. These stories are told, not read, so please come prepared to connect with the audience.
If you are interested in participating, or if you have any questions, please contact Adam Nebenzahl at anebenzahl@bainbridgewa.gov.
Here are some things to keep in mind taken from The Moth, a storytelling organization, for those who wish to perform:
Be prepared
Stories are told, not read. We love how the storyteller connects with the audience when there is no PAPER between them! We will not force you not to have notes, but please try and know your story “by heart” but not by rote memorization.
Have some stakes
Stakes are essential in live storytelling. What do you stand to gain or lose? Why is what happens in the story important to you? If you can’t answer this, then think of a different story. A story without stakes is an essay and is best experienced on the page, not the stage. Start in the action.
Have a great first line that sets up the stakes and grabs attention
No: “So I was thinking about climbing this mountain. But then I watched a little TV and made a snack and took a nap and my mom called and vented about her psoriasis then I did a little laundry (a whites load) (I lost another sock, darn it!) and then I thought about it again and decided I’d climb the mountain the next morning.”
Yes: “The mountain loomed before me. I had my hunting knife, some trail mix and snow boots. I had to make it to the little cabin and start a fire before sundown or freeze to death for sure.”
Know your story well enough so you can have fun!
Watching you panic to think of the next memorized line is harrowing for the audience. Make an outline, memorize your bullet points and play with the details. Enjoy yourself. Imagine you are at a dinner party, not a deposition.
Steer clear of meandering endings
They kill a story! Your last line should be clear in your head before you start. Yes, bring the audience along with you as you contemplate what transpires in your story, but remember, you are driving the story, and must know the final destination. Keep your hands on the wheel!
No standup routines please
We love funny people but require that all funny people tell funny stories.
No rants
Take up this anger issue in another setting, instead shape your anger into a story with some sort of resolution.
No essays
Your eloquent musings are beautiful and look pretty on the page but unless you can make them gripping and set up stakes, they won’t work on stage.
No fake accents
If your story doesn't work in your own voice, or that of your people of origin, please consider another story. Imitating accents from another culture or race rarely works and often offends.
Please use the stage to practice civility and respect. Please don't include racism, homophobia, misogyny or any form of hate speech.
