As fall approaches, Bainbridge Island is brimming with events that celebrate creativity, community, and culture. This week, we’re highlighting three unique happenings that will keep you engaged and entertained. First, we have the Squash Hunt at Bloedel Reserve, a fun-filled family event that invites you to explore the beautiful gardens while searching for colorful squash hidden throughout the grounds. It’s a perfect opportunity to get outdoors and enjoy the autumn scenery while participating in an exciting scavenger hunt that both kids and adults will love.
Next, you’ll want to make time for the 2024 Bainbridge Book Festival Launch Party at Bainbridge Island Museum of Art. This festive gathering marks the start of the highly anticipated book festival and provides an opportunity to meet some of the featured authors in a casual and creative setting. Attendees can chat with the authors, explore BIMA’s art galleries, and enjoy light refreshments as they gear up for a weekend filled with literary discussions, author talks, and book signings. Whether you’re a book lover, an artist, or simply looking for something fun to do, these events offer a range of experiences to enjoy.
Finally, we cap off the week with A Night at BARN, an annual fundraising event at Bainbridge Artisan Resource Network. This evening is designed to showcase the amazing work happening at BARN’s many studios, from woodworking to jewelry making, and everything in between. You’ll have the chance to meet the talented makers and artists, participate in hands-on activities, and bid on unique handcrafted items in the auction—all while supporting a good cause. The event also includes live music, food, and drinks, ensuring a lively and enjoyable atmosphere.

Squash Hunt
The Squash Hunt at Bloedel Reserve is a family-friendly fall event happening from October 1 through October 31, 2024. This event is a self-guided scavenger hunt designed to add a little fun to your regular walk through the gardens. As you explore the grounds of Bloedel Reserve, you'll be on the lookout for colorful and creatively placed squash hidden throughout the property. The squash will be tucked away in various locations, so it’s a great activity to keep both adults and kids entertained as you stroll through the stunning fall landscapes.
This event is part of Bloedel Reserve’s ongoing efforts to offer engaging activities that highlight the natural beauty of the season. The Squash Hunt is simple to participate in—there’s no need to sign up ahead of time. Just show up during regular garden hours, grab a scavenger hunt map at the entrance, and start your search. You can explore at your own pace, whether you want to take your time and enjoy the changing leaves or challenge yourself to find all the hidden squash as quickly as possible.
Expect to walk through different areas of the reserve, including woodlands, meadows, and more curated garden spaces. Along the way, you’ll encounter Bloedel’s signature peaceful trails, perfect for taking in the sights and sounds of nature. The Squash Hunt adds an extra layer of excitement to the experience, especially for younger visitors, as they search for hidden squash while learning more about the surrounding environment.
Since the event runs all month long, it’s a good opportunity to visit the reserve more than once and see how the scenery changes as the fall season progresses. You don’t need any special equipment to participate, but comfortable shoes are recommended for walking the trails. You might also want to bring a camera to capture some of the beautiful fall scenery and, of course, your squash discoveries.
The Squash Hunt is a fun and low-key way to spend time outdoors, whether you’re with family, friends, or just want to enjoy a solo adventure in nature. It's a great way to make the most of the fall season while experiencing the beauty of Bloedel Reserve.
