Plein Air Painting in the Gardens: Learn from an Expert
The Plein Air Paint Out at Bloedel Reserve is an open invitation to artists of all skill levels to spend a day capturing the beauty of nature in one of Bainbridge Island's most picturesque settings. Set for October 5th, 2024, from 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM, this event encourages participants to bring their easels, paints, and creativity to the tranquil grounds of Bloedel Reserve. The event is a great opportunity to connect with the stunning landscapes that the Reserve has to offer, whether you’re a seasoned plein air painter or trying your hand at outdoor painting for the first time.
“Plein air” is a French term meaning “open air,” and this style of painting involves working outdoors and painting the natural surroundings in real-time. Bloedel Reserve’s 150 acres of meticulously landscaped gardens, forests, ponds, and meadows provide an ideal backdrop for artists to find inspiration. You can expect to see fellow painters scattered throughout the grounds, setting up their materials to capture scenes from different parts of the Reserve—whether it’s the quiet beauty of the Japanese Garden, the calming reflections off the pond, or the vibrant fall foliage that will be in full swing by October.
Artists are free to explore the Reserve and choose the location that speaks to them. For those who might need assistance, volunteers and staff will be on hand to provide information about the best places to set up and paint. You don’t need to register in advance to participate in the Plein Air Paint Out, but all artists will need to pay the regular admission fee to enter the Reserve.
Visitors who aren’t painting are also welcome to attend and enjoy the unique experience of watching artists work live. It’s an excellent opportunity to observe the creative process up close, as artists translate the beauty of the Reserve onto their canvases. If you’re lucky, you might even pick up some tips and tricks from the painters!
The Plein Air Paint Out at Bloedel Reserve is perfect for anyone looking to spend a day outdoors while engaging with art and nature. Bring your painting supplies, wear comfortable clothes and shoes, and be prepared to spend a relaxing day getting lost in your art. Whether you’re an artist, an art lover, or just someone who appreciates the peaceful beauty of nature, this event is a refreshing way to spend a fall day on Bainbridge Island.
