This week encompasses Earth Day so we are focusing on events that get you closer to Mother Earth! And to make you feel extra special you can start the week by enjoying chocolate at the same time as donating to the West Sound Wildlife Shelter. They are partnering with Downtown Chocolate Store, L’Atelier, where you can buy some decadent chocolate and know that 20% of your enjoyment will help the Shelter! On Wednesday (and this repeats each week) forget artificial fibers; become more sustainable by learning or improving your knitting skills at The Lamb & Kid, using their beautiful natural yarns. Whatever your skill level their classes will have something to get you started or learn something new. The finale is on Saturday, when Battle Point Park hosts Earth Day Expo. Volunteer or participate at a fun day of all things Green.

Featured Events:

  • West Sound Wildlife Shelter Chocolate Take-Over, April 17-18, 10am-6pm

  • The Lamb & Kid - Various Knitting Classes, April 19th

West Sound Wildlife Center Chocolate Takeover

West Sound Wildlife Center’s Chocolate Shop Takeover in partnership with L'Atelier and ChocMo. Twenty percent of proceeds raised will be donated to West Sound Wildlife Shelter. Come visit Lisa Horn; check out L’Atelier TR in downtown Bainbridge Island; ooh and ahh over the chocolate waterfall, and buy some decadent chocolate to help support West Sound Wildlife Shelter. And if the chocolate isn't enough of a draw, during the noon hour, they will have a friend or two come visit from the shelter. Plus, for everyone who spends $25.00 or more on the take-over days, your name will be entered into a drawing for a WSWS Swag bag, which includes: a WSWS t-shirt, baseball hat, water bottle, and waterproof picnic blanket.

The West Sound Wildlife Shelter (WSWS) is a wildlife rehabilitation and education facility and serves as the primary rehabilitation center for Kitsap County, and other counties in the western Puget Sound region. They rehabilitate injured, sick and orphaned wildlife, giving them a second chance at life. They strive to follow best practices when it comes to care for their patients and animals.

In addition to their rehabilitation efforts, WSWS works with the greater western Puget Sound community on habitat and species conservation and education. They have partnerships with several local community groups and work with the cities of Bainbridge Island, Gig Harbor, Kingston, Port Gamble, and Poulsbo, to promote conservation, education, and awareness.

WSWS holds state and federal rehabilitation permits from the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service allows them to rehabilitate migratory birds and small and medium mammals. The Shelter holds a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service permit to possess non-releasable raptors for educational programs. The permanent WSWS staff is comprised of the Executive Director, two full-time Licensed Wildlife Rehabilitators, two seasonal Wildlife Rehabilitation Technicians, and one Volunteer Coordinator/Wildlife Rehabilitation Assistant. The entire Wildlife Care team includes the shelter staff, seasonal employees, seasonal interns, more than 70 wildlife care and support volunteers, and an in-house veterinarian.
