Bainbridge Island is brimming with creativity, and this week is no exception. Whether you're an artist looking to refine your skills, a lover of traditional crafts, or a music enthusiast seeking an intimate performance, there’s something special happening on the island. From a hands-on Life Drawing Studio at Bainbridge Island Museum of Art (BIMA) to a Meet the Artist event featuring the exquisite hanjicraft of Young Kim, and culminating in a stunning Chamber Music Concert by the Bainbridge Symphony Orchestra, these three events offer a diverse and enriching cultural experience.

For those who enjoy visual arts, BIMA’s Life Drawing Studio provides a unique opportunity to practice sketching from live models in a supportive and engaging environment. Held every Tuesday evening (except for third Tuesdays), this drop-in session allows artists of all levels to experiment with different techniques and materials. There’s no formal instruction, just a chance to immerse yourself in the creative process alongside fellow artists. If you're looking for a more social experience, the monthly Drink & Draw event offers an alternative, bringing creativity into a relaxed, pub-style setting.

Meanwhile, art enthusiasts will also have the chance to engage with a remarkable artist and tradition at the Meet the Artist: Young Kim event. Young, a master of hanjicraft—a traditional Korean paper art—will be present in BIMA’s galleries to discuss her work and the cultural significance behind it. This delicate craft, which involves intricate paper cutting and layering, has been practiced for centuries, yet Young brings her own modern interpretation to it. Visitors will gain insight into both her artistic journey and the historical roots of hanjicraft, which has recently gained wider appreciation thanks to Korean historical dramas. This is a rare chance to not only admire her work up close but also engage in meaningful conversation about the intersection of art, identity, and tradition.

To close out the week, music lovers can experience an afternoon of chamber music with the Bainbridge Symphony Orchestra. Their March Chamber Music Concert, led by Music Director Ryan Dakota Farris, promises a program of exquisitely curated pieces performed in an intimate setting. The Cynthia Sears Studio offers an up-close experience, allowing audiences to fully appreciate the intricacies and emotions of small-ensemble performances. With tickets released in phases throughout the year, this concert is part of a broader series that aims to bring world-class music to Bainbridge Island in a way that is both accessible and deeply personal.

Each of these events provides a window into the rich artistic and cultural life of Bainbridge Island. Whether you’re drawing, learning, or listening, this week’s lineup offers something for everyone. So mark your calendar, invite a friend, and take part in these one-of-a-kind experiences that celebrate the power of art, tradition, and music.

Life Drawing Studio

For artists of all skill levels seeking an inspiring and supportive space to refine their craft, Bainbridge Island Museum of Art (BIMA) offers a fantastic opportunity: the Life Drawing Studio. Held every Tuesday (except for third Tuesdays) from 6:00 to 8:30 PM, this ongoing series invites participants to sharpen their observational skills while sketching from a rotating selection of unclothed art models.

Hosted in BIMA’s 2nd-floor classroom, the studio provides a dedicated space for exploration in various artistic techniques, mediums, lighting, and poses. Whether you're an experienced artist or just starting your life drawing journey, this is a welcoming environment to practice and grow. While there is no formal instruction, the space is designed to foster creativity, focus, and artistic community. Participants are encouraged to experiment with different styles and approaches, making each session a fresh and dynamic experience.

Each session features a mix of short gesture drawings and longer, timed poses, allowing artists to develop both quick-sketching abilities and more detailed renderings. While attendees must bring their own drawing materials, BIMA provides essential equipment, including easels, drawing boards, and tabletop work surfaces. The relaxed, open format allows participants to work independently while enjoying the collective energy of fellow artists.

The drop-in fee is $20 per session, making it an accessible option for those who want the flexibility to attend as their schedule allows. Whether you prefer charcoal, graphite, ink, or another medium, the Life Drawing Studio offers a unique and inspiring setting to hone your skills.

Facilitated by Jenna d’Anna, Senior Manager of Museum Education & Community Engagement, the Life Drawing Studio is an enriching artistic experience right in the heart of Bainbridge Island. Meet the Artist: Young Kim

Bainbridge Island Museum of Art (BIMA) invites art lovers and cultural enthusiasts to a special Meet the Artist event with Young Kim on March 29, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM. This casual and unstructured gathering offers visitors a unique opportunity to engage directly with the artist, explore her work, and learn more about the intricate world of hanjicraft, a traditional Korean paper art form.

Young Kim’s exhibition is a testament to both artistic mastery and cultural storytelling. During this event, attendees can stroll through the Orientation Gallery and MESA Gallery, where Young will be available to discuss her creative process, inspirations, and the significance of hanjicraft in Korean heritage. Whether you’re a seasoned artist, a craft enthusiast, or simply curious about this beautiful and delicate art form, this is a wonderful chance to connect with the artist behind the work.

Born in North Korea, Young Kim emigrated to Busan, South Korea, just before the Korean War. Her early career took her into the pharmaceutical field—earning a degree from Duk Sung University and running her own pharmacy in Seoul before eventually moving to the United States in the 1970s. Despite the pressure to assimilate, Young remained deeply connected to her Korean heritage, sharing its traditions with her children and community.

Her journey into hanjicraft began later in life, after retirement, when she discovered the intricate paper art made from mulberry bark paper. For nearly two decades, she has been dedicated to both creating and teaching this centuries-old craft, ensuring that its legacy continues. The art of hanjicraft involves precise, repetitive cutting techniques that transform delicate paper into functional, decorative objects. For Young, the process is meditative, blending traditional Korean motifs with her own creative interpretations, often inspired by photographs and found images.

Young Kim’s work is not just about art—it’s about preserving history and sharing culture. With the recent rise in appreciation for Korean heritage, fueled by historical dramas like Under the Queen’s Umbrella, hanjicraft is once again gaining global recognition. This event is a rare chance to meet an artist who has dedicated herself to keeping this beautiful tradition alive.

Don’t miss this opportunity to witness hanjicraft artistry up close, hear Young Kim’s inspiring story, and gain insight into an art form with deep cultural roots. Whether you stay for a quick conversation or linger for a deeper discussion, this will be a memorable and enriching experience.
