Tales from the Christmas Village
A friend of mine from long ago— someone who I find utterly delightful has started an odd little side project that I also find utterly delightful. I could be president of his fan club and I am thrilled to be able to introduce you to this Instagram feed: Tales from the Christmas Village. An acerbic, often a little inappropriate and consistently super funny. ENJOY. I happen to think the world of Cory and am so glad to be able to share a little piece of his world here.
John Denver and the Muppets
I am a Christmas late-bloomer. After my mom passed, I found it to be a sad holiday and often felt a little jealous of all the merriment around me. When I was 17 I came across. Good ol’ John and good ol’ Animal. This was the first ‘cd’ I bought for myself and I know every single beat, chorus, thrown away comment and I love it all. My kids are subjected to listen to this at least 50 times a year- streaming has only made this more accessible.
The Fourth Turning
I’m early into this read but I’m enjoying it- written in 1997, Neil Howe and William Strauss argue that history follows a clear and predictable cycle. Each cycle lasts around a lifetime and consists of four seasons (turnings), each marked by a profound shift in the national mood and culture. This lifecycle of four seasons is made inevitable by four generational archetypes and their order, which they argue has recurred throughout modernity.
