November 2022 Top 3

November already? November seemed to have arrived like a hammer — at least weatherwise. We were in our merry summer fall and suddenly are skipped right into the PNW rain. It’s all good— we loved it while we had it but now I am in nesting, making hearty dishes and thinking about civil activation. Here I am in November.

Scott’s Cheap Flights.

Scott’s Cheap Flights: It’s no secret that I am a travel bug. (That’s maybe even putting it mildly as I get itchy when I haven’t used my passport for a few months. ). I came across Scott’s Cheap Flights a few years back and have used it at least once a year since. If you are someone who isn’t too precious about travel it’s a fantastic way to see the world.

Scott’s Cheap Flights looks for mistaken airfare pricing or significant differences to median pricing. I love it because you can put in the parameters of either where you are interested in flying to– or what airport you generally fly out of. From there you get emails when there is a significant delta from the median price. This could be for remnant inventory or it could be a mistaken algorithm— either way— it’s a great thing for a consumer!

I do pay for the service- they usually have a black Friday sale and I’d absolutely recommend!

Nap Ministry

A friend of mine recommended the Nap Ministry a couple weeks ago during a book club— Jen is a college friend who always knows what’s up. A mini-curator of good things on the internet.

About Nap Ministry:

The Nap Ministry was founded in 2016 by Tricia Hersey and is an organization that examines the liberating power of naps. Our “REST IS RESISTANCE” framework and practice engages with the power of performance art, site-specific installations, and community organizing to install sacred and safe spaces for the community to rest together. We facilitate immersive workshops and curate performance art that examines rest as a radical tool for community healing.  We believe rest is a form of resistance and name sleep deprivation as a racial and social justice issue.

From the founder and creator of The Nap Ministry, Rest Is Resistance is a battle cry, a guidebook, a map for a movement, and a field guide for the weary and hopeful. I’ll be picking this up and would invite you to read with me.

REST IS RESISTANCE: A MANIFESTO came out a couple weeks ago and and I’m diving in.

This book is rooted in spiritual energy and centered in Black liberation, womanism, somatics, and Afrofuturism. With captivating storytelling and practical advice, all delivered in Hersey’s lyrical voice and informed by her deep experience in theology, activism, and performance art, Rest Is Resistance is a call to action and manifesto for those who are sleep deprived, searching for justice, and longing to be liberated from the oppressive grip of Grind Culture.

Zillow on Mars?

“Humans have come so far that we’re back to trying to live in caves. The New York Times reported this week that researchers have been remotely scouting Mars in an effort to identify subterranean caves that would make for a suitable shelter should someone (not me) someday wish to live in them. Geoscientists at the University of Arizona considered two main criteria in their search, and they’re honestly not that different from what you might look for in an apartment: transit accessibility (near a landing site) and good listing photos (high-resolution imagery taken from the HiRISE camera aboard the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter). So far they’ve found nine caves that seem promising.

Why caves? As University of Arizona’s Nicole Bardabelias explained, they could offer humans (not me, again) shelter from Mars’s surface, which is “subject to harsh radiation, possible meteorite or micrometeorite bombardment and really large day-to-night temperature swings.” “

So if you’ve gotten tired of mindlessly browsing Zillow and StreetEasy, you can check out HiRISE’s catalogue of photos and help researchers decide what places on Mars to photograph next that may include your (not my) favorite possible future dwelling. (Tantalizing options include: Large New Crater on Mars and Terrain West of Reuyl Crater.)
