Tour of Coffee Shops
Much like its big sister in Seattle, Bainbridge Island loves to be caffeinated. Although we do have a Starbucks, most of our shops are independently owned with a style and flavor that’s unique to them. Read on for specific menu recommendations.
Blackbird Bakery
Blackbird at 210 Winslow Way E is a cozy bakery overlooking the main street in Winslow. It is a common destination for greetings, catching up on work, or simply enjoying the calm charisma of downtown Bainbridge out the windows.
Know before you go: Seating can fill up fast on weekdays after school and weekend mornings. Blackbird opens at 6AM Monday through Friday, Saturday at 6:30AM and Sunday at 7AM, closing at 6PM every day. Order the toast and jam! Seriously. Back up recommendation: the savory croissant.
Pegasus Coffee House
Pegasus Coffee House at 131 Parfitt Way SW is an old, friendly coffee shop that has been on Bainbridge since 1980. It's the perfect place to grab a tasty beverage with a friend and relax. Many people come here for their smooth coffee and rich hot chocolate. Enjoy the locally-sourced snacks and freshly made coffee after a short stroll along the waterfront.
Know before you go: Pegasus Coffee opens at 7AM and closes at 7PM every day. They frequently host concerts and have a lovely outdoor patio for those that want to socially distance. My personal recommendation is their eggs and greens.
Cups Espresso and Cafe
Cups Espresso and Cafe at 123 Bjune Dr. SE is just steps from Waterfront Park. This small local business is a wonderful friendly gathering destination near downtown and the waterfront where you are likely to catch some glimpses of the local rowing teams glide through Eagle Harbor. Cups have a great selection of light food, health smoothies and some of the best-handcrafted espresso drinks around.
Know before you go: Cups opens at 7AM and closes at 6:30PM every day except Thursday, when they close at 9PM.
Coquette
Coquette is a small cart located in the Winslow Mall open courtyard at 278 Winslow Way E, Bainbridge Island. They are fast and the baked goods are incredible. There are many tables and chairs under a covered pavilion where you can catch up with a friend.
Know before you go: Coquette is open 7-5 most days and has a rotating menu of goods. I enjoy their “Zest for Life” bun which is the happy love child of a morning roll and a croissant with orange zest.
Commuter Comforts
Located at the ferry terminal, Commuter Comforts has been a mainstay in the routines of commuters for years. They allow mobile ordering ahead of time and will have your meal ready to go. Their baked and breakfast items are a selection of goods from local bakeries such as Macrina. They also have a decent gluten-free selection.
Know before you go: The line moves fast— they are staffed according to the ferry schedule and will help get you where you need to with coffee in hand.
Starbucks
Although it’s local (and yet very much not independent,) Starbucks on island is fantastic. Their baristas treat it like a party and it’s hard not to go through the line and not feel in a better mood. Located at 337 High School Road and in Safeway.
Know before you go: It’s Starbucks— exactly what you’d expect.
